Danny Boyle returns with his long-time screenwriter,Alex Garland, after 18 years away from the franchise (28 Weeks Laterwas released in 2007). Some details about28 Years Laterhave already been revealed, including its leading cast — Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes headline the threequel. Even after the first trailer, the plot of the upcoming movie largely remains a mystery. However, we guarantee you it will be nothing like Garland’s original idea for the film.
During a recent interview with GQ to promote his upcoming movieWarfare, Alex Garland reflected on his career so far, whilst alsolooking ahead to28 Years Later.During the conversation, the screenwriter and director revealed where the inspiration for28 Years Latercame from, as well as the wild idea he originally had for the film, which was ultimately scrapped in favor of the version we’ll be getting later this year. “It had been talked about on and off between Danny, and Andrew [Macdonald], Peter Rice, and myself,” Garland said of28 Years Later’s origins. Before the group agreed to make a fourth film, Garland said he already had an idea for another entry in the28franchise, and it was the last thing you’d expect. He recalled:

“At some point, someone else had a crack at writing a script, and I had a really strange idea about Chinese special forces arriving in the UK and making a subtitled film.”

However, it is an interesting concept to imagine.28 Days Laterled audiences to believe that the film was an isolated incident in the UK. However, the end of28 Weeks Laterrevealed that the virus had spread to France and mainland Europe. So, the inclusion of Chinese special forces could have broadened the scope of the28franchise.

‘28 Years Later’ Releases This June
The first trailer for28 Years Laterwill certainly be remembered as one of the best trailers of the past few years. The promo uses Rudyard Kipling’s poem, “Boots,” to haunting effect over visuals of the UK 28 years deep into a zombie apocalypse. As well as highlighting the horror the survivors live through every day, the trailer also tricked audiences into thinkingCillian Murphy’s Jim had been turned into a zombie.Thankfully, it was just an extra who looked remarkably like the Irish actor.
As well as capping off Danny Boyle’s original28trilogy, which began with28 Days Laterback in 2002,28 Years Laterwill also be the start of a new trilogy.The Marvelsdirector, Nia DaCosta is helming the second and third films in the new trilogy.28 Years Later: The Bone Templewill be DaCosta’s first entry to hit theaters. Plot details about the film haven’t yet been revealed.The Bone Templewas shot back-to-backwith28 Years Laterand is slated to release on July 31, 2025.
