Many fans still can’t quite embraceAlien 3, with some considering it the worst movie in the franchise. Some hate it simply because it kills off beloved characterRipleyat the end, sending her to a fiery death. And though she was resurrected as a clone inAlien Resurrection, many simply aren’t willing to forgive directorDavid Fincherand his sequel for what it did. While speaking withLondon Timesat London Comic-Con this past weekend, starSigourney Weaverconfirmed it was her decision to kill off Ripley. Though, we shouldn’t blame the actress.Alien Vs. Predatoris the real culprit to blame!
While 2012’sPrometheusis considered a prequel toAlien, the trueAlienfranchise came to a close with 2004’s Alien Vs. Predator and 2007’sAliens Vs. Predator - Requiem. Neither of which set the box office on fire. Most fans of thelong-running seriesdid not enjoy either crossover, and you can countSigourney Weaverin that group. She definitely wasn’t impressed by these spinoff crossovers. And when asked whether or not it was truly her decision to end Ripley’s life on the big screen inAlien 3, she had this to say.

“Well, yes - because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs. Predator. Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.”
Alien Vs. Predator was one of those movies that sat in development for a long time. It was already moving forward as early as 1992, when Alien 3 came out. But it wouldn’t arrive for 12 more years, withSigourney Weaverreturning inAlien Resurrectionfirst. The actress claims that Alien Vs. Predator was a big reason original directorRidley Scottdidn’t return to the franchise. He wanted to do Alien 3, but didn’t like the direction 20th Century Fox wanted to take with the series. He was actually on board for a long while, but bailed, with first time directorDavid Finchertaking his place. So not only is Alien Vs. Predator responsible for killing off Ripley, it also meant we wouldn’t seeRidley Scottreturn to this world until 2012’sPrometheus.

Sigourney Weavermight hate the idea behind Alien Vs. Predator, she is truly pumped aboutAlien 5, which will reunite her with herChappiedirectorNeill Blomkamp. It isn’t known how they plan to resurrect Ripley for this next true sequel, which will continue the story ofAlienandAliens, but won’t wipe away the events seen in Alien 3 orAlien Resurrection. The movie is also bringing backCorporal Hicks, played byMichael Biehn, who is reported as dead in Alien 3. But he was brought back to life in a recent video game. AboutAlien 5,Sigourney Weaverhad this to say.
“He broke the tapes of these movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much. I love the fact that’s Neill’s fulfilling his childhood dream of what he hopes will be the popcorn movie, the Alien popcorn movie that he wanted as a kid to see.”
20th Century Fox has not confirmedSigourney WeaverandMichael Biehnwill return in Alien 5, but it seems all but official at this point. Both actors andNeill Blomkamphave openly talked about the sequel in a number of interviews. Though, we still don’t quite know how the story is going to reunite the characters, or in what direction it is set to go. What do you think about all this? Are you happier knowingSigourney Weaveris responsible for the death of Ripley? And are you excited to see her return inAlien 5?
