Following the untimely passing of producerJon Landau,Alita: Battle Angelfans have taken to social media to call for the sequel to finally be greenlit in his honor.Landau was known for his frequentcollaborations with seminal director James Cameron, with the pair having worked together on such major blockbuster hits asTitanicand theAvatarfranchise, as well as the fan-favorite cyberpunk action flick,Alita: Battle Angel.
Released back in 2019,Alita: Battle Angelis based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga seriesGunnm. The adaptation was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis, with the story following a young girl named Alita, a battle cyborg who awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize. While the movie was met with mixed reviews from critics at the time,Alitahas since garnered a hugely passionate fan following who have branded themselvesthe ‘Alita Army’ and have been pushingfor the sequel for some time.

Landau was a known supporter of the fanbase, with many having now taken to X/Twitter to praise the producer and call forAlita: Battle Angel 2to get the go ahead. “The rest of Alita’s cinematic saga needs to be dedicated to Jon Landau. Let Jim and Robert finish the trilogy in his honour, Disney!” says oneAlitafan, with another adding, “Time to make another Alita video on behalf of him.”

Jon Landau gave the Alita Army hope and strength to continue the campaign for anAlita: Battle Angelsequel,” said another fan on X.

A sequel to Alita: Battle Angel may finally making the rounds, leaving us to wonder what it has in store for fans of the first film.
While any updates onAlita 2have been pretty scarce lately,Landau himself did revealjust last year that talks were underway. Here’s what he said toScreen Rantabout the project, noting that he was “very proud” of the first outing.

“Yes, I just answered that I knew before you even got there. I’m very proud of that film, and we were doing it concurrently with Avatar. I was down with Robert on the set doing all that, and Jim was involved too and saw it. It came on HBO one night, and Jim watched it and called me after he watched it. He said, “Jon, Alita was on, I just decided to watch it. It’s a good movie.” (laughs) And it is! So, I want to be able to definitely do more in that world.”
Alita: Battle Angel 2was clearly a movie that Landau was passionate about, and no doubt the Alita Army will continue to fight for the chance to one daysee the sequel light upthe big screen in his honor.
