The Farrelly brothersbecame well known for a string of “gross-out” comedies in the late ‘90s, and one of their biggest successes was the 1994 hitDumb and Dumber. In a recent interview withVariety, Peter and Bobby Farrelly took a moment from promoting their new film,Dear Santa, to address the chances of fans getting to seeJim Carrey and Jeff Daniels returningfor a third time as the hapless Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, respectively.

While no official plans are in place for any such movie, and withJim Carrey still seemly on the verge of retirement, the Farrellys always apparently have an eye on jumping back into theDumb and Dumberworld. Asked about any of their past successes they would like to return to in the future, they said:

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber

Peter: I still take notes whenever I hear something that I think would be a good Dumb and Dumber joke. I keep a list because I could easily see us doing another Dumb and Dumber someday.

Bobby: We did it on the 20th anniversary, and right now we’re at the 30th anniversary. So in 10 years… Those guys are so much fun to work with. If we’re all still kicking around, I’d love to do that. Any of those movies that we’ve done … Look, There’s Something About Mary. We love those characters so much that if we ever thought of a way to bring them back and retell a story using those characters again, we’d be up for it because we love the characters. If we weren’t passionately in love with those characters, we wouldn’t want to do a sequel.

Dumb and Dumber is a 1990s Classic Comedy

The originalDumb and Dumberwas released in 1994 as the first movie by the Farrellys, and it was a success right out of the traps. On a budget of just $17 million, the film grossed over $247 million worldwide, scoring highly in audience reviews and managing to gain some reasonably positive scores from critics too. Although a prequel eventually followed in 2003’sDumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, it did not actively involve the Farrrellys, and the lead roles were played by Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen, it was not until2014 that fans finally saw the original team return forDumb and Dumber To.

TheDumb and Dumberfranchise had some recurring themes amid the chaotic comedy, like the fact that the movies always seemed to involve a road trip that goes wildly out of control thanks to the complete ineptitude of the lead duo. As with many comedy franchises,Dumb and Dumberremains the best of the franchise, and while all three movies were moderately successful at the box office, the specter of diminishing returns in review scores certainly hangs over the additions to the franchise.

Why Dumb and Dumber Is a Perfect Road Trip Movie

The Farrelly Brothers' slapstick comedy Dumb and Dumber is smarter than it claims to be.

While there is no doubt that the star power of Carrey and Daniels, in a time when nostalgic sequels are at a peak, could sustain anotherDumb and Dumbermovie, at some point there needs to be a moment where the question whether another sequel has anything else to say is asked. If the Farrellys can come up with something that they feel is as funny as the original, and if they could coax their lead stars into one more road trip adventure, then there would surely be an audience out there willing to receive just one more round of stupidity.
