Academy Award winner and acting iconAnthony Hopkinshas no plans to retire anytime soon, with theSilence of the LambsandNixonstar saying he is in “good health,” and simply loves working. In a recent interview withPEOPLE, Hopkins, now 86 years old, revealed that he will continue to act for as long as he possibly can, and says he is “aware” of his own mortality.
“I’ve just had a medical checkup. I’m in good shape. I’m aware of my mortality. To be realistic, I know that if I have a few more years of work in me, I can do it. So work keeps me alive. I love working. I love being an actor. I love activity…I love the process of preparing a role. That keeps my brain neurologically active. I love that.”

During his illustrious career, Hopkins has received six Academy award nominations, winning two for Best Actor for his performance as Hannibal Lecter in 1991’sThe Silence of the Lambsand then again for his role in director Florian Zeller’sThe Fatherin 2020. Always the humble thespian, Hopkins says he simply feels “lucky” to still be working and receiving scripts at his age.
“I’m so lucky to be working at my age. They still seem to send me scripts, and I think, ‘Well, good.’”

In further discussions withPEOPLE, Hopkins revealed that he is currently writing a biography, and that his wife of 20 years, Stella Arroyave, is now putting together a documentary.
“I’m writing a biography. It’s a weird process. I realized how I’m blessed with one thing. Maybe it’s my actor’s brain. I do have quite a memory,” continues the star of The Silence of the Lambs. “I remember days of months in the years.”

Regarding the documentary, Hopkins says his wife has “carte blanche to [cover] everything” about his career, and that she has interviewed several of Hopkins’ co-stars, including Jodie Foster.
“I don’t know. I don’t ask her. It’s quite a lot of film. I don’t know when it’s going to come out.”

The story depicts a fictional meeting between the pair and sees two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century discuss the future of mankind and the existence of God. Based on the stage play of the same name by Mark St. Germain and directed by Matthew Brown, Freud’s Last Session is out now in theaters.
Of course, Hopkins has never been afraid to bring his renowned talent to big-budget franchises alongside his quieter character work, with the actor due toreprise the role of the mechanical knight, Jimmy, in director Zack Snyder’sRebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, which is scheduled for release on Netflix on June 13, 2025.
