One of the characters inAvengers: Age of Ultronwe know very little about isPaul Bettany’s Vision, who was finallygiven his own character poster yesterday.Entertainment Weeklyhas an in-depth piece on Vision, which reveals much of what we thought we knew about the android may not be true. There will be plenty ofSPOILERSbelow, so read on at your own risk.
We know thatPaul Bettanypreviously provided the voice of Tony Stark’s A.I. personal assistant J.A.R.V.I.S., but inAvengers: Age of Ultron, he gets a new form as Vision. We also know that Tony Stark creates Ultron from one of the old Iron Legion robots, but this is only his first form. The A.I. becomes so advanced that Ultron ultimately comes to the conclusion that the human race need to be extinguished for the planet to survive. During the scene we’ve seen in the trailers, where Ultron crashes the party at Avengers Tower, Ultron seems incoherent, unsure of where he is, and that he had to escape, which meant he had to kill “the other guy,” which is J.A.R.V.I.S. After Ultron attacks the Avengers, they realize that J.A.R.V.I.S. is in fact dead. When Ultron escaped, he managed to take whatever was left of J.A.R.V.I.S., which he uses to create Vision.
What remains to be seen is whether or not any semblance of the original J.A.R.V.I.S. is left in Vision. It’s possible that these new details are why Marvel has been keeping such a tight lid on Vision. We only saw him pop up briefly at the end of the first trailer, and his image has only been seen on the poster from earlier this week and in random pieces of promotional artwork. It seems there is much more to Vision’s story than we first imagined, which will all unfold whenAvengers: Age of Ultronhits theaters on May 1.
Entertainment Weekly also has a thorough spoiler breakdown, which both confirms and shoots down various rumors that have been floating around lately. For one, the rumors thatAvengers: Age of Ultronwill introduceDoctor Strangeand/orCaptain Marvelare not true, and we will not get our first glimpse at the new Spider-Man here as well. While Spidey is set to debut in one Marvel movie before his own Sony Pictures stand alone adventure, it isn’t this movie, although it seems likely that the debut will happen in next year’sCaptain America: Civil War. The site also mentions that The Winter Soldier is referenced, but not seen inAvengers: Age of Ultron.
We reported earlier this month thatLinda CardelliniandJulie Delpyhave roles inAvengers: Age of Ultron, which came as a surprise because they were never previously announced as part of the cast.Julie Delpyis playing Black Widow’s instructor during a flashback sequence, butLinda Cardellini’s character has still not been revealed. The site reports her character delivers an “emotional payoff,” while confirming that she isn’t a superhero or villain, but someone of great importance. The site also teases that a major character dies, but they do not reveal which one. You may recall there were rumors that Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) doesn’t survive in the sequel. While this report is far from a confirmation, don’t be surprised if it turns out to be true.
There were a lot of fans wondering who the mysterious woman disrobing in a cave was in the second trailer. Some speculated that she could have some ties to Wakanda, the fictional homeland of Black Panther, but, as it turns out, she isn’t even in the movie. The site reveals that Thor’s journey inside this cave is “a bit of a headscratcher,” speculating that a major subplot was either shortened or eliminated entirely. However, Wakanda is actually referenced in the movie, since this is where Ultron needs to get Vibranium from to upgrade his robotic form. This is where Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) comes in, since he has access to Vibranium. Klaue ends up losing a hand, which likely sets up his return in theBlack Panthermovie.
