We’ve got some new goods for the upcomingFantasy Island movie. Blumhouse Productions and Sony Pictures are turning the classic TV series into a big screen affair next year, but with something of a twist. Instead of being a happy, fantasy-fulfilling affair, this is going to have a horror twist. That is teased by both the movie’s first synopsis and the newly released plot synopsis.
Starting with the poster, the image itself is gorgeous. We see a lush tropical island covered in greenery and surrounded by crystal blue water. It’s the kind of island getaway that so many dream of. There is a small plane heading toward the island and the ominous hashtag, which serves as the movies' tagline, #NeverComingHome. Sony Pictures shared the one-sheet on Twitter with the following caption.
“This island is a scream. Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island in theaters Valentine’s Day.”
Fantasy Island, the show, featured guests recounting their experiences after visiting an island ran by the mysterious Mr. Rourke, who had seemingly unlimited resources. As such, visitors were able to have virtually any fantasy they desired fulfilled on the island. Though, those fantasies really never turned out as the guest expected. Based on the synopsis for the movie, things are going to take a darker turn. The synopsis reads as follows.
“The Enigmatic Mr. Roarke (played by Michael Pena) makes the secret dreams of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious but remote tropical resort. But when the fantasies turn into nightmares, the guests have to solve the island’s mystery in order to escape with their lives.”
So it sounds like they’re going with a murder mystery angle here. Jeff Wadlow, who recently helmed the lowkey hitTruth or Dare, is in the director’s chair for the TV series adaptation. The cast includes Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lucy Hale (Truth or Dare), Michael Pena (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Charlotte McKinney (Baywatch), Parisa Fitz-Henley (Midnight, Texas) and Austin Stowell (Bridge of Spies).
Blumhouse started out by turning low budget horror offerings into hit franchises.Paranormal Activity,InsidiousandThe Purgeare just a few examples. They’ve also been behind some Oscar-winning hits such asWhiplashandGet Out. In recent years, the studio has started to explore applying its low-budget model to pre-existing properties, with 2018’sHalloweengoing on to become a huge success.Fantasy Islandrepresents the production company’s latest such endeavor.
Fantasy Islandoriginally aired from 1977 to 1984 on ABC. The show ran for sevens seasons, totaling 152 episodes, as well as the original two made-for-TV movies. A single-season revival season aired in 1998. This will mark the first time that the property has made its way to the big screen.Fantasy Islandis set to hit theaters on July 13, 2025.
