Dune: Part Twotopped the box office this weekend, and immediately became the highest grossing movie of 2024 so far. Having ridden a wave of unanimously positive reviews to its opening day, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel did not disappoint as it easily displacedBob Marley: One Lovein the No. 1 spot. Additionally,Dune: Part Twonow boasts the biggest opening weekend of 2024, with an estimated $81.5 million domestic haul (perBox Office Mojo).
Internationally,Dune: Part Twomade even more of a mark as Villeneuve’s critically acclaimed film brought in an additional $97 million, which led to a worldwide total of $178.5 million over its opening weekend. This means the movie took just three days to overtake Jason Statham’s action-packedThe Beekeeper,with its total global gross of $151.4 million, and claim its place as the year’s No. 1 film.The Beekeeperhas been playing in U.S. cinemas since January 12, further demonstrating the popularity of the sci-fi epic.

Dune: Part Two
In domestic theaters,Dune: Part Twomade a staggering $74.1 million more than the No. 2 movie,Bob Marley: One Love. The biopic took in $7.4 million to claim second place over the weekend, while Alan Ritchson’sOrdinary Angelslanded at No. 3 with $3.9 million. Meanwhile, the Dakota Johnson-ledMadame Web’s No. 4 position is not yet guaranteed.
Dune 2 Reigns at the Box Office
WhileDune: Part Twodid not have any problem living up to itsprojected $65+ million opening weekend, or bringing in audiences,Madame Webstruggled yet again at thebox office. Director S.J. Clarkson’s superhero flick saw a further decline of 45.9% from last week to make an estimated $3.2 million, as it squeaked into the No. 4 slot. If the estimates hold until the numbers are confirmed on Monday, the superhero film will just beat out Fathom Events’ presentation ofThe Chosen: Season 4 Episodes 7-8, which took the No. 5 slot with $3.15 million.
Dune 2 Ending (And What That Epic Cliffhanger Means), Explained
Much like its predecessor, Dune: Part Two ends with an epic cliffhanger that feels more like the start of a new chapter.
However, the numbers also reveal thatDune: Part Twodid not have the highest per-theater average over its opening weekend. Rather, newcomerProblemista, which debuted at No. 20, made $28,187 per theater (limited release), while Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic made just over $20,000 a cinema. The difference being thatDune: Part Twoopened in 4,071 theaters and A24’sProblemistain only five.

While January and February might have represented a bit of a lull for moviegoing, things will heat up asDune: Part Twofaces plenty of competition in the coming weeks:Kung Fu Panda 4(March 8),Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire(March 22) andGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire(March 29). However, for the time being,theStar WarsandLOTR-equeDune: Part Tworeigns over the global box office.
