Abramsultimately landed the role,Brad Birdwas one of the early contenders. He even considered going into production onTomorrowlandwhile simultaneously prepping forStar Wars: The Force Awakens, but ultimately decided against it. However,Brad Birdrecently teased that he may still be interested in making aStar Warsmovie.
Rian Johnsonis attached to write and directStar Wars: Episode VIII, withJ.J. Abramspossibly coming back for the trilogy finale,Star Wars: Episode IX.Gareth Edwardsis directing the first spinoff,Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, butJosh Trankrecently pulled out of directing the second spinoff.Brad Birdhinted he has been talking withKathleen Kennedyabout coming into the Star Wars universe.

“WellKathyand I have discussed the possibility of-I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and-J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of-I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.”
However, since he will be tied up in makingThe Incredibles 2for the next few years, he essentially dismissed the possibility of making aStar Warsmovie entirely.

“Yeah in fact just avoid all this Star Wars stuff. Everybody’s feeding too much on that anyway.”
