This afternoon,J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot and legendary authorStephen Kingsent out a mysterious new trailer on Twitter for a series entitledCastle Rock. For fans ofStephen King, the town of Castle Rock, Maine is featured in a number of the author’s stories, such asCujo,Needful Things,The Dead ZoneandThe Bodywhile the town is also referenced inCreepshow,IT,Gerald’s Gameand more. It seems all of these worlds may be coming together in thisCastle Rockshow, which will be an anthology series on Hulu.
The Hollywood Reporterreveals thatCastle Rockwill be an anthology series that will “weave together characters and themes” from theStephen Kingnovels that use theCastle Rocklocation. Each season will follow a different set of characters and story lines, while “interjecting themes and specific characters from previous seasons.” The site also reports thatManhattancreatorSam ShawandManhattanexecutive producerDustin Thomasonare attached to the series in some fashion.
The town ofCastle Rockfirst surfaced in the 1979 novelThe Dead Zone, which was named after the mountain fort inWilliam Golding’s 1954 novelThe Lord of the Flies. Theteaser traileralso includes references toMisery,Salem’s LotandThe Shawshank Redemption, so it seems likely those stories will be tied into the series. Other stories theCastle Rocktown is featured in areUncle Otto’s Truck,Mrs. Todd’s Shortcut,The Dark Half,The Sun DogandIt Grows on You. It isn’t known how many episodes the first season will be, or when production may begin.
Castle Rockwill be the secondHulu TV seriesforJ.J. AbramsandStephen King, following the hit series11/22/63, which starsJames Francoand aired on the streaming service last year. It hasn’t been confirmed who has been set to write the pilot episode, or if casting is slated to begin in the near future. It also hasn’t been confirmed if the series will be set in Maine or not. All we do know at this point is that the show has been given a series order, but hopefully we’ll find out more details in the very near future.
Since many of the stories set in Castle Rock have been adapted into movies and/orTV shows, it would be interesting to see if this show would consider bringing back any of those cast members to reprise their roles, or if they just plan on re-casting for these characters. Still, it has been many years since some of those movies and TV shows have debuted, so perhaps that may not be the best strategy. At any rate, take a look at the teaser trailer forCastle Rockbelow, and stay tuned for more on this mysterious new series that will debut on Hulu at some point in the near future.
