We have yet another new poster for the upcomingChild’s Play Remakethat may offend the sensibilities of Toy Story fans. As it just so happens, this movie is opening on the same day asToy Story 4next month, which should prove to be one of the more interesting box office showdowns of the summer, as two very different varieties of toys that come to life will be duking it out for the hard-earned dollars of various moviegoers. The creative team behindChild’s Playhas been having fun with that notion, this time at the expense of Slinky Dog.
A previous poster, very similar to this one, took the same background from theToy Story 4character posters and saw Chucky dispatching of Woody. This time around, the murderous doll has turned his attention toward Slinky Dog, who is literally being roasted over a fire in some sort of cruel joke about hot dogs. The poster was shared to the movie’s social media accounts with the following caption.
“On June 21, find out what’s really cooking.”
While some may find this poster clever, it’s also easy to see how some might find it in poor taste. It takes on a certain possible meaning, given that Jim Varney, who previously voiced the character, passed away in 2000. In the years since, Blake Clark has taken up the mantle ofSlinky Dog. Still, since the original voice actor who brought the character to life has since left us, one could argue this is in poor taste. But it does seem on brand for this particular franchise. Chucky has little or no compunction when it comes to killing people. He certainly wouldn’t hold back in taking out a toy, no matter how beloved that toy may be.
This new take onChild’s Playwill be the first in the franchise to rest the continuity. Though,creator Don Manciniis working on a TV series for SyFy that will keep the old continuity intact. The remake is also going to be the first to not feature Brad Dourif as the voice of Chucky. Instead,Star Warsicon Mark Hamill will be taking over duties as the new version of the horror icon. In this version, Chucky will be portrayed as a technologically advanced, artificially intelligent doll, as opposed to one possessed by the spirit of a serial killer. Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman and Brian Tyree Henry topline the cast.
WhileToy Story 4is sure to come out on top of the box office that weekend,Child’s Playhas the chance to do solid business, assuming critics don’t roast the remake upon arrival, much like Chucky has done to poor Slinky Dog.
