Spending hours in the makeup chair to get himself transformed into Oz Cobblepot probably gets tedious at times, but be that as it may,Colin Farrellcannot get enough of portraying the Penguin. Earlier this year, Farrell debuted as the supervillain opposite Robert Pattinson as the titular superhero in Matt Reeves’The Batman. Because he wore prosthetics and heavy makeup, the role left him so unrecognizable that the actor wouldventure out into public during productionand nobody was the wiser.
Reeves is currently working on a screenplay forThe Batman 2, and as of now, it’s unclear if Farrell will be reprising his role as Penguin for the sequel. Speaking about the possibility in a new interview withEntertainment Tonight, Farrell says he’s just as much in the dark about that as the story is still getting sorted out and there’s not yet a finished script. WIth that said, Reeves can count on Farrell to be there if there’s a way to work Penguin into the story, as Farrell makes it clear he’s totally committed to sticking with the Penguin role.
“Oh my god, you kidding me?! It’s so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean … it was a joy.”
Either way, we will definitely see more of Farrell as Penguin. HBO Max has put into production a new series focusing on Farrell’s Penguin and his rise as one of the top criminals in Gotham City. Farrell reveals that Reeves won’t be personally directing the episodes of the Penguin series but that he’s still heavily involved creatively.
“Matt’s up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he’s just so meticulous. He’s so obsessive about what he does, but he’s all over [HBO Max’s]The Penguin[series] as well. I mean, he’s not gonna direct it but he’s all over the structure of the scripts and who’s gonna direct them. And so, it’s exciting.”

Colin Farrell Credits Mike Marino For Penguin’s Appearance
For many fans, Colin Farrell stole the show with his limited screen time inThe Batman, but the actor will only accept half of the credit for the character landing well with viewers. Farrell says makeup artist and prosthetics designer Mike Marino had put in just as much work, if not more so, and deserves to have the credit shared.
“I was hidden beneath Mike Marino’s work. Mike Marino’s such a genius – what he did, what he created. I’ve never had less ownership about a part I played than I have over [“Oz”]. I really can’t. It’s 50-50, maybe 49-51 in his favor.”
The Penguinwas given a straight-to-series order at HBO Max, but it’s unclear when filming will begin. Farrell suggests that the series will likely start filming in early 2023. He is next planning to start working on the sci-fi series Sugar at Apple TV+ and can soon be seen in the new filmThirteen Liveswhich comes to Prime Video on Jun 26, 2025.
