After spending several years in development hell, theCommunitymovie is now slated to start filming in Summer 2024. Recently, it was reported that the film, which serves as a continuation of the popular TV series, was about to start shooting. The writers strike then took place, halting the plans to start rolling cameras on theCommunityfilm until after the strike is over. While speaking with Kelly Ripa on herLet’s Talk Off Camerapodcast, McHale shared a new update on the project, revealing how the new plan is to film next summer.

“We’re shooting it next summer,” McHale told Ripa, going on to confirm one cast member’s involvement. “[Donald Glover’s] coming back, and that’s really important. Well, the fact that we even got Donald to do it… that was the big piece. But, I think everyone’s coming back. So far, we’re pretty good, and I think that will happen.”

McHale then joked, “If not, then, you know, Donald will be there. See? It’ll just be Donald. It’ll just be an episode ofAtlanta.”

McHale doesn’t divulge any other specific names to be confirmed for the cast, but by saying “everyone,” he seems to be suggesting that all of the major players will return. Along with McHale and Glover, the series starred Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash. After appearing in the first five seasons of the series, Chevy Chase was fired from his role on the show, and McHale suggests that it will be very doubtful he will return as Pierce Hawthorne in theCommunitymovie.

Chevy Chase Will Probably Not Be in the Movie

“That one, yeah, I don’t think so,” McHale said when asked if Chase would be in the film, sarcastically adding, “There wasn’t any issues at all when we were making the show!”

McHale is referring to the many reports that have come out about Chase’s problematic behavior with his co-stars on theCommunityset. Beyond that, Chase’s character was killed off when the actor was fired from the series, so that makes it even more improbable that Pierce will make an appearance in the film. Glover’s confirmed involvement probably seals the deal, as series creator Dan Harmon previously addressed how there was friction between the two actors.

“Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off,” Harmon explained toThe New Yorkerin 2018. “I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-P.C. verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it.'”

“I am saddened to hear that Donald perceived me in that light,” Chase is quoted as saying in response to the story.

In any case, theCommunitymovie will start filming in Summer 2024, as long as there are no other delays. There is no release date yet set for the film.
