Long beforeGuardians of the Galaxybecame a massive hit at the box office last summer, many fans were wondering who would actually play these diverse characters.Bradley Cooperwas the last actor announced, and many were surprised that directorJames Gunnchose him to voice the snarky raccoon, but he ended up becoming a fan favorite. DirectorJames Gunnis currently in Atlanta, entering pre-production on the sequel,Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and during some downtime yesterday, the filmmaker held a live video Q&A session through hisFacebookpage. The director dropped a very interesting tidbit, revealing that comedy legendDanny DeVitoactually tried out to voice Rocket inGuardians of the Galaxy.
“In all honesty,Danny DeVitois one of the voices we tried out. ButDanny DeVitois an older man now, and Rocket is not an older man. He’s a younger man. AndDanny DeVito’s voice just wouldn’t work.”
The director was responding to a fan who asked that he replaceBradley CooperwithDanny DeVito. It isn’t known what other actors actually read for the Rocket Raccoon role beforeJames Gunndecided onBradley Cooper, but the casting choice was later praised by fans after they finally got to hear what Rocket would sound like. Rocket, along with the rest of the Guardians, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista) and Groot (Vin Diesel) will be back forGuardians of the Galaxy 2, which is currently in pre-production in Atlanta.
If someone would have walked in toGuardians of the Galaxynot knowing any of the cast members involved, that person most likely would not have guessed thatBradley Cooperwas the voice of Rocket. The actor eliminated all traces of his Philadelphia accent to portray the snarky raccoon, and his gravelly voice is unlike anything we’ve ever heard from the actor, before or since then. The casting worked out for the best, asGuardians of the Galaxywent on to become the surprisebox officehit of 2014, taking in $333.1 million domestic and $774.1 million worldwide.
James Gunnalso revealed during the Q&A that the biggestGuardians of the GalaxyEaster Egg has still gone unnoticed, although he wouldn’t divulge any clues.
