It proved to be a bittersweet moment as it was a heroic end to the character, but fans were upset to see one of the legacy players meet their end.

Dewey also began a relationship with Gale Weathers (Cox), with the pair ultimately gearing up for marriage at the end of the third film. Following the release of the fifth film in 2022, Cox was pretty vocal about it being amistake that Arquette’s character was killed off. At the time, the actress said she fought to keep the character’s ending more ambiguous, much how it was done inScreamandScream 2, in case the filmmakers changed their minds about bringing him back. Cox said, “I absolutely did, and I kind of thought they heard me. I remember being on the lawn going, ‘I just thought it was a big mistake not to have the option. I understand why you want [to do it] — it makes it really serious. But then wouldn’t it be great if just [in] the last three minutes: text from the hospital.’ I wanted that to happen.”
