Supermanstar Rachel Brosnahan wants to see Lois Lane get superpowers in the DCU’s future, possibly in a sequel. Rachel Brosnahan steps into theiconic role of Lois Lane, a part previously played in live-action by Noel Neill, Phyllis Coates, Margot Kidder, Teri Hatcher, Erica Durance, Kate Bosworth, Amy Adams, and Elizabeth Tulloch. Lois Lane is often the star reporter for the Daily Planet and is one of the most important non-superpowered characters in comics. Yet, multiple comics have featured Lois Lane gaining superpowers for a brief period of time, something the DCU star hopes to see.

‘Superman’ Now Eyeing a Record-Breaking Opening Weekend That Blows Past Zack Snyder’s DCEU

James Gunn’s take on the Man of Steel could break several DC superhero movie records in one weekend.

Answering questions forWired’s Most Googled Superman Questions, one asked if Lois Lane ever gains superpowers. Brosnahan citedAll-Star Superman#3, where Lois receives powers for a day on her birthday, and James Gunn noted in the current run of DC Comics, Lois Lane has powers. Brosnahan asked Gunn if he was inspired by these comics, hinting that she wanted to acquire powers later on. Gunn said, “I think about it every time I see her with powers, I’m like, ‘I know it…. I know it’s Rachel’s.’ She was so happy to be cast as Lois Lane, and another part of her was like, ‘I want to be able to fly.'” Brosnahan then jokingly told the viewers:

“Tell James you want a sequel where Lois Lane flies.”

Lois Lane’s History with Superpowers

Apart fromAll-Star Superman, Lois Lane has a long history of acquiring superpowers in the comics. While Lois was the first person to take on the Superwoman mantle inAction Comics#60 (May 1943) in a dream scene, she did not receive superpowers untilAction Comics#156 (May 1951). During the DC Rebirth period in 2016, Lois Lane and Lana Lang gained superpowers due to exposure to solar radiation from the death of theNew 52 Superman. In 2024, during the DC All-In Initiative, Lois Lane took on the mantle of Superwoman once more inSupermanvol 6 #19. Ironically, despite James Gunn stating that Lois Lane has powers in the comics when the interview was filmed, the character lost her powers inSuperman#25, published in April 2025, three months before the film’s release in theaters.

There certainly is a precedent for Lois Lane gaining superpowers in the comics; the question is whether it will happen in the DCU. The cinematic universe is beginning anew, so anything is possible. Nobody in 2008, after the release ofIron Man,could have predicted that the Marvel Cinematic Universe would adapt characters like Moon Knight or Adam Warlock. WithAll-Star Superman’s influence on James Gunn’s take on Superman, it is entirely possible to see Lois Lane get powers in the future and build off that fun Silver-Age comic energy that informs his DC reboot.

Yet, notably, there is noSupermansequel in the works as of this moment. James Gunn is working on a new DCU film, but has stated that it isnot a conventionalSupermansequel. This has led to some speculation that it will be a team-up film between the Man of Steel and perhaps another DC hero. Given the magnetic chemistry between Brosnahan’s Lois Lane and David Corenswet’s Superman, it is likely that whatever his next meaningful appearance is, she will be there as well, regardless of superpowers.
