Marvel Studios can do no wrong andDoctor Strangehas proved that in a big way. The movie has been surpassing expectations and now it has soared past another strange Marvel Cinematic Universe movie. With yet another solid weekend under its belt,Doctor Strangehas overtakenAnt-Manat the worldwide box office.
According toBox Office Mojo,Doctor Strangehas now pulled in a grand total of $571 million at the global box office. The movie added another $17.6 million to its domestic total this weekend.Ant-Manmanaged to pull in a grand total of $519 million during its entire run andDoctor Strangehas already surpassed that by $52 million, and the movie still has a long way to go.
On paperAnt-ManandDoctor Strangecouldn’t be more different, aside from the fact that they are both movies based on superheroes, but they do share some similarities. Both of these movies have pushed the boundaries of theMCUbeyond more typical superheroes and in both cases it was unclear how audiences would respond.Ant-Manrepresents one of the more modest total box office takes forMarvel Studios, but it was still enough to make the studio very happy considering the expectations they had for it. IfDoctor Strangedidn’t make another dime Marvel would probably still be happy with what the movie managed to do, but this could wind up being a surprise on the level of something likeGuardians of the Galaxy($773 million worldwide), which would make them ecstatic.
The $519 million thatAnt-Mangrossed was enough for Marvel Studios to give the green light to a sequel,Ant-Man and the Wasp, which is due out on June 19, 2025. Given thatDoctor Strangeis already far beyond that it seems almost inevitable thatDoctor Strange 2will be announced at some point. We may have to wait though, becauseKevin Feigehas said that announcing any Phase 4 movies would be spoilers for what will happen inAvengers: Infinity War.
Currently,Doctor Strangesits in 10th place in terms of the global box office take for MCU movies, withThe Avengersat the top with $1.5 billion. It seems likely thatDoctor Strangecould wind up overtakingThor: The Dark Worldin the number seven spot, which managed to gross $644 million. But if things go really well, the number six spot could be in sight, which currently belongs toCaptain America: The Winter Soldierwith $714 million.Doctor StrangestarsBenedict Cumberbatch,Tilda Swinton,Chiwetel Ejiofor,Benedict Wong,Rachel McAdamsandMads Mikkelsen. It was directed byScott Derricksonand is in theaters now.
