In just under two short weeks, Marvel will expand their Cinematic Universe even more with the highly-anticipated adventureDoctor Strange, which has already been tracking well. According to somebox office analysts, the Marvel adventure could earn as much as $75 million in its opening weekend on November 4, but many fans are already wondering what will come next for the Sorcerer Supreme. According toBenedict Cumberbatch,Doctor Strangewill join a much bigger group of heroes inAvengers: Infinity War. Here’s what he had to say during a London press event.
“He’s gonna be an Avenger.”
Benedict Cumberbatcheven teased in a previous interview that theSorcerer Supremeis being introduced to “open up the next chapter.” It’s worth noting that filming begins next month on bothAvengers: Infinity Warand the untitledAvengers Sequel, which is slated for a massive nine-month shoot to cover both movies. Marvel hasn’t confirmed any cast members for either movie yet, but it certainly makes sense thatDoctor Strangewould be called upon to help take down the nefarious Thanos (Josh Brolin) inAvengers: Infinity War.
In related news,Doctor StrangedirectorScott Derricksonspoke withDen of Geek, where he was asked about plans for aDoctor Strangesequel. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but ifDoctor Strangedoes open big, as projected, and continues to have a strong theatrical run a sequel is surely inevitable. When asked about the possibilities of making a sequel happen, he said the first movie was just the beginning, while alluding to the approach of a much different superhero sequel.
“I love the character, I love the visual possibilities, and I know the comics so well. [The first movie is] the tip of an iceberg. There’s so much progress that can be made. What madeThe Dark Knightso great was that theorigin storyof Batman had been well-told, and then it was time to bring in a villain where you really got to go deep. And not just the Joker, also Two-Face. It was a more visceral experience, I’d love to be able to do that forDoctor Strange.”
Unfortunately, the director would not confirm whether or not he’s actually working on the story forDoctor Strange 2, or if the filmmaker plans on bringing back otherDoctor Strangestars such asTilda Swinton,Chiwetel Ejiofor,Rachel McAdams,Benedict Wong,Michael Stuhlbarg,Benjamin BrattandScott Adkins,Mads MikkelsenorTilda Swinton.Scott Derricksonco-wrote the screenplay with his collaboratorC.
