Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thievesis the newest D&D movie, as well asone of the most successful. It’s hard to bring a roleplaying game to life that is largely created by each group of players, but the movie knew its roots and knew how to use that to its advantage. Using settings and lore seen throughout the many D&D books, and basing their characters within some of the races and classes, it brought to life a high-stakes journey for a group that seemed to always get stuck on the hard path.

One thing that translated well from table to screen was the interactions and comedy usually seen passing from player to player. Whether it be sitting around and listening to a character tell some of their backstory, deep and thoughtful moments as the characters begin to trust and connect with each other, or the jokes that come through hilarious failures and other comedic moments. While there are tons of hilarious moments throughout the movie to enjoy, these are just a few of the best funny moments you may find.

Hugh Grant as Forge in Dungeons and Dragons_ Honor Among Thieves

10An Odd Tea Mishap

When Edgin and Holga finally find Forge after their prison escape, he sits them down to talk about everything that had happened and brings in refreshments. However, during the conversation, Forge can’t stop talking about how the tea is way too hot to drink.

Finally, he turns to Sofina and tells her to cool the tea down with her magic. She does, but instead of casting a spell towards it, she sticks her finger directly into the cup. This disgusts Forge, and he’s rather vocal about this too. Thanks to the scene and its performance, it’s a funny and unforgettable moment, even if it’s rather inconsequential when looking at the movie as a whole.

Edgin and Xenk with the helm of Disjunction

9The Helm of Disjunction’s Backstory

Any relic powerful enough to have its own distinct name definitely has a story behind it in any universe. This one is no different. The party learns about the helm’s backstory as they search for its location, and they discover details about the last battle it was in along the way.

Before the last owner of the helm died, he entrusted its safety and protection toanother member of his army. There are then several six-second clips of the helm continuing to pass through the hands of those in the army before the person giving it away is killed at almost the exact time in the sentence the last person was killed. Not only is this funny in itself, but knowing that each time the helm is passed on is another body they have to dig up makes it even better.

8The Stairs Aren’t Very Sharp

When it’s revealed that Forge and Sofina are the antagonists, Edgin and Holga are taken by the guards and led to their attempted execution. However, Holga stalls the executioner by talking about his axe and its care, using the time to pry a stone free that she then uses to save herself and begin to fight the small group of guards.

When she distracts them, Edgin begins to cheer her on while he works on the ropes around his hands, trying to use the edge of the stairs to cut through it. As he continues to try and fail at cutting through his bonds, even when he does get a hold of a sword, he continues to cheer her on, watching her do almost all of the work before he’s finally freed. It’s a funny moment that shows us very early on that fighting is definitely not Edgin’s strong suit.

7Killing the Final Boss

After finally turning the tides against Sofina through an intense climax, Edgin distracts her for long enough that Doric canshift into an owlbearand use her hulking size to her advantage. She slams Sofina to the ground a couple of times before looking back over at Edgin.

Though he says he thinks she got Sofina, and she’s good, Sofina shakily raises a hand, causing Doric to grab her and slam her really fast into the ground a few more times. Then, for safe measure, flings her into a nearby wall, which then crumbles and falls on top of her. The over-exaggerated killing is hilarious and definitely how anyone would feel after going through so much at the hands of this enemy.

6The Portal Plan Has Just a Few Hiccups

Once the group is aware that they are traveling with a staff that can make portals into other places, they devise a plan to sneak into the palace with it. They plant a painting in a carriage traveling to the castle, which they’ve hidden a portal under. However, not everything goes to plan when the painting falls off of the bottom of the carriage as Doric tries to pull it in.

Simon is quick to react, grabbing Doric’s hand through the portal, while Holga grabs his legs to keep him from falling through. Now he’s halfway dragging along underneath the carriage, and the guards don’t even see him. What they do see, however, is Holga holding his bottom half. She offers them a smile and a wave as they pass as if it’s something normal for them to spot in the forest. It’s a funny moment that also proves even the best laid plans can go bad very quickly.

5Not Even a Rock Can Stop Xenk

Xenk is only a temporary member of the party, leading the others through the Underdark to retrieve the helm he had hidden there. Once they’ve recovered it, he leaves them so that they may continue the rest of their heist plans. After saying his goodbyes, the camera focuses on him leaving across the beach while we hear Edgin remarking on what he’s doing as he goes.

This includes just how straight his path is as he walks away, as well as how he doesn’t even break his stride as he steps onto and over a boulder that is in his way instead of going around it. The scene is a funny moment and a nice break in the action but wasalso improvised during filming, meaning it wouldn’t have been nearly as funny if they didn’t deviate a little from the script.

4No One In the Group Is Intelligent

There are many D&D monsters throughout the movie, including the intellect devourers. These little creatures look like brains and consume intelligence. Xenk warns the group of the possibility of running into these creatures when they venture into the Underdark. It just so happens that, in a very tense moment, a few of the very creatures in question wander towards them along the same narrow cave path.

With nowhere else to go, the party tenses and presses themselves up against the wall in an attempt to hide — only for the intellect devourers to walk right past them without a second thought. For a species that only feeds on intellect, clearly they didn’t sense any among the group, or at the very least not enough that was worth fighting for.

3A Failed Illusion Spell

In an attempt to distract some guards and sneak into the palace, the sorcerer Simoncreates an illusion spellof Edgin stepping in through the front door and playing a song with his lute. Unfortunately for the group, Simon gets stuck and loses his concentration, so the spell fails. This means the image of Edgin begins to skip as if it’s a broken record, and his body begins to distort.

Though this in itself is funny, the guards are still distracted by it for a few more seconds as they watch with growing horror before it begins to levitate away and they finally turn around to spot the party. Towards the end of the spell, the illusion even sounds like it’s repeating a certain expletive over and over as fast as it can.

The speak with dead spell is a great way to find out information no one else would have access to. In the D&D movie, they use it to try and track down The Helm of Disjunction, which they need in order to get into the castle’s vault. They travel to a graveyard of the people who died in the last battle the helm was seen in.

After digging up the first corpse and casting the spell, Edgin asks the corpse if he was in the battle, to which he says yes. Then, in trying to clarify how the spell works and ask Simon how many more questions there were, the rest of them were accidentally used, and the corpse died again.

As if this waste of time and magic wasn’t funny enough, there are two other corpses who don’t quite get the questions you’d expect, as one is asked random questions after they have their answer so he can die again, and one is left behind with only one question left.

1Council Member Jarnathan

There’s no doubt thateverything surrounding Jarnathanis one of the funniest moments in the movie. First, his absence from the council makes Edgin keep asking for him as well as trying to stall the council. Then, when he finally does appear close to the end of their appearance in front of the council, Edgin and Holga jump him and drag him out of the window, using his wings to fly them safely down to the ground and run away before he could recover.

As they smash through the window, one of the council members even yells after them that their pardon was approved, meaning they didn’t have to try and escape in the first place. Even his name seems just like a character you might find in the actual game that was quickly made up on the spot as needed for the story.
