Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesseems to be the best attempt to the tabletop game franchise to the big screen so far, but the doesn’t mean the film won’t be without its critics one way or the other. The new Super Bowl spot for the fantasy adventure movie has brought another look at the world of monsters and magic that hopes to transport fans and newcomers alike to another world. Check out the teaser trailer below ahead of its airing during the Super Bowl:

TheDungeons & Dragonsfranchise is almost 50 years old, and in that time hasamassed a huge amount of fansand integrated itself in pop culture to the point the name is one of the most recognizable brands for roleplaying games. There are number of challenges in bringingDungeons & Dragonsto the big screen, and a lot of thought has gone into trying to get this movie right where previous attempts have failed. Producer Jeremy Latcham commented:

Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez and Justice Smith

“To me, it all comes down to tone. Right? I think the tone that you want to hit is that thing where you’re just like, you’re having this fun, fun, fun time, and you’re getting hit in the heart all the time, over and over again, and you see stuff you’ve never seen before. That’s what these guys do so well. It goes back to me having worked with them on Spider-Man: Homecoming, and reading the first thing I ever read of theirs was just this thing that kind of matched up genres and was hilarious, and heartfelt, and adventurous, and everything else. Knowing that they had that in them and being so thankful to be on this journey with them here to bring this totally huge new world to life. It’s damn exciting."

After so many years and branching extensions, theD&Dfranchise has become such a vast, lore-laden property that there should be endless stories for both movies and TV shows to adapt, yet so far most of the attempts have only served to alienate the game’s fan base and fail to attract those unfamiliar with the game in comparison to other fantasy projects.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thievesis directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who co-wrote the screenplay with Michael Gilio. The star-studded cast includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head, and Hugh Grant.
