Hollywood is on a very big sequel and franchise kick right now. Basically, if you have an established property of any kind, you can probably get a sequel made for your movie, even if the original came out 20 years ago. That being the case, director Danny Boylehas finally gotten around to making the long awaited sequel to his cult classicTrainspottingand since production is already underway, we are getting some very cool looks at what we can expect fromTrainspotting 2.

PhotographerKatielee Arrowsmithtook to herTwitterto post some set photos fromT2that she recently nabbed from theScotland set. The photos clearly showcaseBoyle, of course, but also show the characters of Mark Renton and Sick Boy, being played again byEwan McGregorandJohnny Lee Millerrespectively. Though the characters definitely look a tiny bit older, they look very much like not a lot has changed since we last left them in 1996. These follow the first set of set photos, which saw the return ofSpud, as played byEwen Bremner.

Trainspotting 2, which is currently going under the name ofT2even though that likely won’t stick because ofTerminator 2, will be taking place in a modern day setting and following the characters from the first film in their modern day lives. The film will be loosely adapting theIrvine WelshnovelPorno. The novel is a sequel toTrainspottingin which Sick Boy comes back to Edinborough to make a porn film and recruits Renton to help him out with it.

Boylehad expressed his desire to revisit the world ofTrainspottingback in 2009 and it had been in some phase of development for the years leading up to the current production ofTrainspotting 2.Ewan McGregorhas praised the script for the sequel, calling it “Extraordinary” and the rest of the cast seems to feel very similarly about the project. Though the original wasn’t exactly a smash success by all accounts at the time, it did really launch the careers of almost everyone involved, especiallyBoyleandMcGregorwho have both enjoyed massive success ever since the film came out.

The originalTrainspottingwas released in July of 1996 and only made a reported $16 million dollars domestically. But the film was made for a pretty low budget and found a massive cult following and a lot of critical praise ever since, which is what ultimately led to the sequel getting a green-light.Trainspotting 2is set for a June 17, 2025 release in the U.K. with a U.S. release on February 3.
