Last week, FXrenewedtheir critically-acclaimed drama seriesFargoforSeason 3, with just two episodes remaining inSeason 2. Much like FX’s horror anthology seriesAmerican Horror Story, each season ofFargowill feature a different setting with new characters, although there will be connections to each season before it.Entertainment Weeklycaught up with series creatorNoah Hawley, who revealed that the third season will take place a few years afterSeason 1.

“It’s more contemporary. It’s set a couple years afterSeason 1.”

Season 1ofFargowas set in the year 2006, butSeason 2is set in 1979. While each season features a completely new set of actors, there is a connection between the first two seasons in Lou Solverson. Lou was played byKeith Carradinein the first season, withPatrick Wilsonportraying his younger counterpart in 1979. In the first season, Lou spoke about one of his most grislymurdercases ever, known as the “Massacre at Sioux Falls,” which this current season is leading up to. When asked about the potential forSeason 1orSeason 2characters to return inSeason 3,Noah Hawleyhad this to say.

“There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody. here will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.”

While the series creator wouldn’t give the specific year thatSeason 3is set in, he did confirm that it won’t be set in present day. Much like the originalFargomovie, the events portrayed in the series claim to be “based on true events.“FargofilmmakersJoel CoenandEthan Coen, who serve as executive producers on the FX series, revealed years later that their movie is not based on actual events.Noah Hawleyadded that, because of this “true story” format, each season has to be set at least a few years before present day.

“The idea of the ‘true story’ is it always has to be at least a few years ago, because the idea is we finally know what really happened and it took time - because the book doesn’t come out until five or six years after.”

FX hasn’t revealed how many episodes they ordered forSeason 3, but it will likely be a 10-episode season like the first two seasons before it.
