Last week during Comic-Con, Marvel unveiled anew trailerfor their highly-anticipated Netflix seriesLuke Cage, which debuts September 30. The footage was set to the classicOl' Dirty Bastardhip-hop song “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” and it appears that this show will be filled with rap references. Earlier today, showrunnerCheo Hodari Cokerrevealed the titles for the first three episodes, which will be quite familiar to fans of the rap groupGang Starr.
The showrunner took toTwittertoday to reveal that theseries premiereepisode will be entitledMoment of Truth, with the second episode entitledCode of The Streetsand the third titledWho’s Gonna Take The Weight?, which are all titles ofGang Starrsongs. Theshowrunnerconfirmed at Comic-Con that every episode will be titled after aGang Starrsong. He also promised in his tweets today that episode titles will be revealed every Friday from now until the September 30 premiere.
The showrunner was also present at the Television Critics Association summer tour today, where he confirmed a number of new details about the series. One of the show’s biggest sets is a club called Harlem’s Paradise, which is owned byCottonmouth Stokes(Mahershala Ali).Cheo Hodari Cokerrevealed that there will actually be some famous musicians performing at this club.
“We always said that God forbid the show doesn’t work, at least we can book out the club. We were lucky enough to have, you know,Raphael SaadiqandFaith EvansandJadakissandCharles Bradley, and a number of people that you’re going to see in these episodes. So, on one hand, it’s a living, breathing club and also, gangsters love music. So that’s the thing about what the club represents to Cottonmouth, as well as to his family. It’s really our Iron Throne, to a certain extent, is that club. Even the way that it’s established, it just really sets up our version of this universe in a really compelling, really fun way.”
The showrunner added that these musicians will be performing a mixture of their own hits, along with original music on theNetflixseries.Cheo Hodari Cokeralso took to Twitter just minutes ago to clarify thatJadakissis not performing on the show, and that he actually “mumbled” The Stylistics, and “someone got confused.” Take a look atCheo Hodari Coker’s tweets below, and stay tuned for more onLuke Cage.
