Heists and war movies are two of the most popular genres in cinema history. So, what happens when you mix them together, and throw inChallengersstar Josh O’Connor for good measure? You getThe Mastermind, the new movie directed by Kelly Reichardt (First Cow). The film is set to make its debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival (which takes place from May 13 to 24), and the first look at the Vietnam War heist film has just been released.
Deadline recently released the first official look at Josh O’Connor and Alana Haim inThe Mastermind. Kelly Reichardt wrote and directed the upcoming film, which follows an art thief looking to score big in the middle of the Vietnam War. Following its debut at Cannes,The Mastermindis being distributed by Mubi. Expect a limited theatrical release, before the movie lands on the Mubi streaming service. The theatrical release date is expected to be revealed following its Cannes premiere. Deadline described the film:

“Set in a sedate corner of Massachusetts circa 1970, the film follows JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter turned amateur art thief, who plans his first big heist. When things go haywire, his life unravels.”
‘Bonus Track’ Clip Shows Josh O’Connor’s Role in Coming-of-Age Romance

The Mastermindis produced by Neil Kopp, Anish Savjani, and Vincent Savino. Alongside O’Connor and Haim,The Mastermindalso stars John Magaro, Hope Davis, Bill Camp, Gaby Hoffmann, Amanda Plummer, Eli Gelb, Javion Allen, Matthew Maher, Cole Doman, andThe Penguin’s Rhenzy Feliz.The first images don’t give too much away, but they do give us a closer look at O’Connor’s JB Mooney, along with Alana Haim’s unnamed character. Two of the stills show Mooney in action. Meanwhile, the third depicts Haim’s character. While it hasn’t been confirmed, given she’s sitting at a desk in a police station, it’s safe to assume she’s some kind of detective. Check out the new stills below…

Josh O’Connor continues to pick interesting projects. After making his acting debut in 2012 in an episode ofInspector Lewis(followed by a short stint onDoctor Who), O’Connor got his big break when he appeared in threeepisodes ofPeaky Blinders.From there, he starred in the likes ofGod’s Own CountryandThe Durrells, before his career exploded after portraying Prince Charles inThe Crown.
O’Connor’s biggest hit to date has to beChallengers, the 2024 tennis drama, also starring Zendaya and Mike Faist. The actor also led the vastly underappreciatedLa Chimera(another Mubi project) in 2023. His career will continue to boom in the coming years. As well asThe Mastermind, O’Connor has been cast alongside Paul Mescal in Oliver Hermanus’The History of Sound. He is also set to star in Rian Johnson’s upcomingKnives Outthreequel,Wake Up Dead Man,as well as the untitled Steven Spielberg movie. That’s one hell of a pipeline!
