After years of delays,productionis finally under way onBridget Jones' Baby, the third film inRenée Zellweger’s beloved film series that includes 2001’sBridget Jones’s Diaryand 2004’sBridget Jones: The Edge of Reason.Colin Firthreprises his role as Mark Darcy from the first two movies, withPatrick Dempseycoming aboard to play a new character. Today we have the first photo ofRenée Zellwegeras the title character, seen clutching an iPad.

Hugh Grantis not returning as Daniel Cleaver fromBridget Jones’s DiaryandBridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Way back in 2012, long before production actually got started, it was rumored thatHugh Grantwas leaving the project, and it turns out that actually turned out to be true, three years later. While no details were given forPatrick Dempsey, it’s possible that he will become a new romantic rival for the title character’s affections.

Deadline’s report from last month claims that the story is actually based on authorHelen Fielding’s newspaper columns, and not her latest bookMad About The Boy. The book follows Bridget as she has a couple of kids, while Mark Darcy has passed away.Helen Fieldingwrote the adaptedscreenplayalongside David Nicholls (One Day,Far from the Madding Crowd).

No plot details have been confirmed, but the title obviously references Bridget Jones having a child, although the identity of that child’s father remains to be seen. Debra Hayward is producing alongside Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Universal Pictures will co-finance with Miramax and StudioCanal. Now that production has finally begun, hopefully we’ll start to hear more about supporting cast members in the near future.
