Back in May, Netflix announced astraight-to-seriesorder for their new programG.L.O.W., a fictionalized account about the star of a women’s pro wrestling league known as the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.).Orange is the New BlackcreatorJenji Kohanis serving as executive producer of this new series, and today we have word that the show has found its star inAlison Brie. While theCommunitystar is the first actress to sign on, it isn’t known how many other primary roles are still needed to be cast.
Deadlinereports that this series is inspired by the real 1980s female wrestling league. The show will be set in Los Angeles, showcasing big hair and body slams. It will be the fictionalized story of an out of work actress named Ruth (Alison Brie), who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers.
Jenji Kohan(Orange is the New Black) andTara Herrmann(Orange is the New Black) are executive producers ofG.L.O.W.. The series was co-created byLiz Flahive(Homeland) andCarly Mensch(Orange is the New Black), who will serve as showrunners. The real series ran for four seasons between 1986 and 1989, based in Las Vegas, which featured wrestling matches along with sketches and songs.
The show marksAlison Brie’s return to thestreaming service, after voicing Diane Nguyen on the hit animated seriesBojack Horseman. She also recently portrayed Miss Dunstble in the Amazon Studios seriesJulian Fellowes Presents: Doctor Thorne. This new role inG.L.O.W.will mark her first starring role sinceCommunityended its six season run on Yahoo! last year. She also had a recurring role on AMC’s hit drama seriesMad Men.
