Suitspresents the world of high-paid lawyers as being all about dressing sharp, delivering quippy comebacks, backstabbing your friends, and approaching the bench without asking for permission in a court of law. But, in real life, it’s far from the suave depiction found in the hit series, and the show’s star,Gabriel Macht, has had to apologize more than once for misleading fans.Macht plays Harvey Specter in the series, and its new spin-off,Suits: LA. Harvey is the embodiment of the show’s cool lawyer aesthetic, and it’s had a resounding effect on the fan base.

During a recent interview withPeople Magazine, Gabriel Macht revealed that many fans have signed up for law school because ofSuits(this writer personally knows someone who has done exactly that). But, when they’rehit with the reality of law school, Macht says he can only apologize for Harvey Specter’s influence.“There are so many kids that have gone to law school because of the show,“Macht said, continuing, “They think it’s fast-moving, there’s family, there’s loyalties, it’s cool, it’s slick. People are witty. There’s a lot of drama, all this kind of stuff.” Who knew that a job where people’s very freedom is in your hands would be about more than looking cool and having one-night stands? NotSuitsfans, apparently.

“When people come up to me, and they’re like, ‘I went to law school because of you,’ I always apologize profusely,” Macht continued.

As well as the presentation skills required to win over clients and juries, lawyers also need to know their specific sub-sect of the law like the back of their hands. It turns out, the secret to that is reading. Lots, and lots of reading. Macht continued:

“I’m sorry. If you like to read, that is great because you’re going to sit with a book, like this, for hours.”

Suitspremiered on the USA Network back in 2011. Theshow followed Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), who uses his photographic memory to earn a job at the prestigious firm, Pearson Hardman. The only catch being he never went to Harvard (where they exclusively hire from), or any law school for that matter. The series also starred Sarah Rafferty, Meghan Markle, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Torres.

Despite coming to a close in 2019 after nine seasons,Suitssaw a massiveresurgence last year when it was added to Netflix. The show’s streaming debut broke records for weeks after it was released on the platform. Macht saidthe resurgence “created this whole new energy around it.“Although, he has no idea where the die-hard fandom came from, continuing, “I don’t know if it was Netflix, or if it was TikTok, or [if] the stars aligned in some way, and it absolutely blew up.”
