Last month, Paramount Pictures released the firstGhost in the Shelltrailer, featuringScarlett JohanssonasThe Major. As we get closer to the August 06, 2025 release, the studio has debuted an international trailer. It doesn’t feature any new footage that wasn’t already revealed in previous sneak peek videos, but it includes Japanese subtitles and a voice over narration. While you’ll have to be fluent in Japanese to understand the subtitles and comprehend the narration, you won’t need to learn any new languages to enjoy the exciting visuals on display.
The first trailer debuted with a global launch party in Tokyo featuringScarlett Johansson,“Beat” Takeshi Kitanoand directorRupert Sanderswho were joined by fans and influencers from across the globe. Opening with Taiko drummers, including the legendary anime film composerKenji Kawai, the event began with a screening of never-before-seen footage from the film. Attendees were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the costumes and props from the film, as well as an opportunity to capture their experience in a film-centric experiential photo booth - “Becoming the Major.” The exciting show concluded withJohansson,Kitano, andSandersdebuting the film’s global trailer, triggering its worldwide launch. This international trailer comes fromParamount Pictures Japan.
Thisanime adaptationofGhost in the Shellis said to stick very close to the manga that it is based on, outside of the fact that the producers have been accused of whitewashing . This also won’t be the first time thatScarlett Johanssonhas had the chance to lead a major action franchise outside of playing Black Widow inThe Avengers. In 2014, her movie sci-fi/action thrillerLucygrossed an impressive $463 million worldwide. Given the “whitewashing” controversy swirling around this movie, it remains to be seen whether or not that will impact its box office performance.
TheGhost In The Shellmovie is based on the very popularmangaof the same name. The story follows Kusanagi (Scarlett Johansson), acyborgthat is a part of an elite cybercrime-fighting task force known as Section 9. The series was originally published in 1989 and was written by Masamune Shirow. It is generally considered to be one of the best manga series ever published. That being the case, other adaptations ofGhost in the Shellhave come before, with an animated series, spin-off books and even a video game. This new live-action take looks to become the definitive version for modern audiences. Many fans have taken the adaptation to task for castingScarlett Johanssonin a role portrayed as an Asian female in the original manga, the latest film of many to be called out for “whitewashing.”
