The originalGodzilla vs. Kongfilm, released in 2021, was initially meant to serve as the epic conclusion to Legendary’s North American reimagining of the classic Toho monster. As it turns out, this epic monster action film would become the most successful film in the series up to that point, a much-needed win after the somewhat disappointing box office haul of 2019’sGodzilla: King of the Monsters. The success would lead to the 2024 sequelGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, turning Godzilla and King Kong into allies instead of enemies, with the film making enough money to warrant a third installment, which is now confirmed to be in production thanks to a comment from an actor in the film.

At the Sydney premiere of the upcoming second season of HBO’sThe Last of Us, actor Kaitlyn Dever revealed that production on the currently untitledGodzilla x Kong 3has begun. Dever told the press she was “shooting another film in Queensland right now, so I just popped down to Sydney for all of this press, and then I’m going back there.” The reporter asked if it was theGodzillafilm she was referring to, and Dever confirmed that it was. The film currently doesn’t have a release date, but the film going into production could indicate a release date as early as late 2026 or early 2027.

2024’s MonsterVerse Team-Up with a 54% Rotten Tomatoes Score Roars on Netflix’s Streaming Chart

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ is a monstrous hit after joining the Netflix library last week.

Kaitlyn Dever has had a busy schedule filming the ambitious adaptation ofThe Last of Us Part II, which is expected to return for a third and possibly fourth season in the future. Should that be the case, the television series could enter production again later this year, though there has been no official confirmation from HBO. For now, Dever will find herself in theMonsterverseand caught between the two massive Titans Godzilla and Kong as they go against what’s only been described as a cataclysmic world-ending threat.

Godzilla x Kong with Dan Stevens as Trapper with Rebecca Hall

‘Godzilla x Kong 3’ Will Feature an Impressive Cast of Human Characters

Despite massive successes at the box office, the lack of compelling human characters is one of the biggest complaints about theGodzilla x Kongseries of films (and of theMonsterversein general). Rather than supplementing the on-screen action with engaging character work, movies likeThe New EmpireandKing of the Monsterslose momentum whenever the action cuts back to whatever the human cast was doing. One highlight of the latestGodzilla x Kongfilm was Dan Stevens as the monster veterinarian/dentist Trapper, whose aloof performance was a highlight, and will thankfully be returning for the threequel.

Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, and Matthew Modine will join Stevens and Dever in the upcoming monster movie. There have been no reports of Rebecca Hall or Brian Tyree Henry, who appeared in the past two GxK films, returning for the third film. Perhaps what is most interesting about the movie is that it won’t be directed by Adam Wingard, who directed the first two films.

Instead, Grant Sputore will directGodzilla x Kong 3from a script by David Callaham. The screenwriter is best known as a co-writer on films such asShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsandSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseand has a story credit forGareth Edwards'2014Godzillafilm. With filming seemingly underway,Monsterversefans can look forward to more kaiju-sized action sooner rather than later.
