Back in April 2014, Fox announcedGrease: Live, a live three-hourmusical special. Today, Fox, viaTV Line, has released the first three photos from this highly-anticipated event, giving us our first look atJulianne Houghas Sandy,Vanessa Hudgensas Rizzo andAaron Tveitas Danny. Fox will air this three-hour event on Sunday, January 31 from 7 PM to 10 PM.
Grease Livewill reintroduce and reimagine some of the show’s most memorable moments, great music and timeless love story to an entirely new generation. In this live television adaptation of the musical classic, the beginning of senior year means the end of Danny and Sandy’s summer romance - until Sandy unexpectedly transfers to Danny’s high school. With their friends pulling them in different directions, it’s up to Danny and Sandy to stay hopelessly devoted as they make their way from Rydell High to a new frontier.
Based on the 1971 Broadway musical of the same name with book, lyrics and music by the legendary team of Warren Casey and Jim Jacobs, the 1978 hit filmGrease, starringJohn TravoltaandOlivia Newton-John, grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing movie musical ever at thebox office. Grease: Live will be executive-produced by acclaimed film, television and theater producer Marc Platt, with Thomas Kail overseeing the stage direction and Alex Rudzinski serving as the live television director.
Broadway writers Robert Cary and Jonathan Tolins are writing the live television adaptation, with Zachary Woodlee choreographing the live dance performances. The supporting cast ofGrease: LiveincludesCarly Rae Jepsen(Frenchie),Mario López(Vince Fontaine), Carlos Pena (Kenickie) andKeke Palmer(Marty). Pop powerhouse and Grammy Award-nominated singer Jessie J will open the live event with a performance of a brand-new version of “Grease (Is the Word),” written by Barry Gibb.
Grease: Livemarks Fox’s first foray into the live musical world, which comes on the heels of several successful NBCspecialssuch as The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live!.
