One of the biggest Comic-Con surprises this summer came during the Marvel panel, when the firstGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2footage was show. Most fans expected a trailer, but no one expected scenes that confirmed the sequel’s biggest secret, thatKurt Russellis playing Ego the Living Planet,Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father. During a new interview,Kurt Russellexplains that the sequel is much more complicated than just that simple reveal. Even though this huge secret has been divulged, it’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Shortly after the release ofGuardians of the Galaxyin 2014, writer-directorJames Gunnannounced that the sequel will in fact give-up the identity of Star-Lord’s father, confirming that it won’t be the same character as in the comics, J’son.Kurt Russellrecently spoke toColliderwhile promoting his new true story adaptationDeepwater Horizon, where he made it clear that the story is much more complex than just this plot twist. Here’s what he had to say.
“I was impressed with the stuff that I saw atComic-Con, but they didn’t show you everything [laughs]. It’s a very complex story, and they really get into it. This is going to be one of the more—probably for Marvel, it’s more connected to human issues, family issues, parental issues, and issues that sons and daughters have with their moms and dads and their family tree, where they come from. I just think it’s going to be an interesting— Peter’s character in this one, he’s got dilemmas and he’s got decisions to make that are not just about whether to save that thing or that person. This is about finding out who you are, where you come from, and where you’re going.”
This comes just a few days afterGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2starChris Prattmade the bold statement of calling this sequel, “the biggest spectacle movie of all time.” Aside from the introduction of Star-Lord’s dad, we learned in descriptions for the Comic-Con trailer that the sequel picks up just a few months after the events of the first movie, and that Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) escape from a space station jail, with the help of Baby Groot (Vin Diesel}). The footage also showedSylvester Stallone, but his character’s identity, which is called important to the story line, is being kept a secret for now.
We also saw in pictures released earlier this year thatYonduwill have a much bigger mohawk in this sequel than he did in the first adventure, which is much closer to the comic books. The Guardians Star-Lord, Rocket, Baby Groot, Drax (David Bautista) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will be joined by a number of new characters includingPom Klementieff’s Mantis,Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha,Chris Sullivan’s Taserface andTommy Flanagan’s Tullk. Marvel has set a August 09, 2025 release date forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so stay tuned for the first trailer.
