Today is Inauguration Day, as President-ElectDonald Trumpbecomes sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. Netflix thought today would be fitting to release a new teaser forHouse of Cards Season 5, which doesn’t include any actual footage, but does reveal that the series will return to stream Season 5 in its entirety on May 30. The teaser features a group of children saying the Pledge of Allegiance, while we see what appears to be a traditional American flag, but we see that it’s actually hanging upside down.
Last year, when thestreaming service renewedthe hit series for Season 5, it was also paired with the announcement that series creatorBeau Willimonwas stepping down as showrunner. The network announced in February thatMelissa James GibsonandFrank Pugliese, two senior writers who have been withHouse of Cardssince 2014, have been promoted to showrunners of the award-winning Netflix original series, from Media Rights Capital. The streaming service hasn’t released a plot synopsis yet, but this season will focus on Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and his wife (Robin Wright) running for re-election.
There will be a few new characters joining the show whenHouse of Cardsdebuts this season onNetflixthis May.Patricia ClarksonandCampbell Scottboth signed on to play new characters in this upcoming season, although it isn’t clear how many episodes they signed on for.James Martinezhas also landed the recurring role of Alex Romero, described as “a cunning and progressive congressman from Arizona.” The streaming service hasn’t announced how large his role will be either, but last year, another cast member revealed he was not returning to the show.
Mahershala Ali, who stars in the critically-acclaimed indie filmMoonlight, revealed that he isn’t coming back for Season 5 aspolitical lobbyistRemy Danton. The actor revealed in an interview that he didn’t feel he had anything new to offer to the show, and that he thinks it was the right time to end the story line for that character. The actor did return to the Netflix streaming service last year, though, playing Cottonmouth Stokes on the hit Marvel superhero seriesLuke Cage. Still, it isn’t known how his absence will be written off in Season 5.
