The much talked about reboot ofI Know What You Did Last Summerhas already lost its star inCamila Mendesthanksto her commitment to appear in the reboot of another franchise,Masters of the Universe. TheRiverdaleactress was cast earlier this year in the horror movie as one of the leads alongsideOuter Banks’ Madelyn Cline, and it remains unclear at this point if someone else will be able to slide into her spot, or if the project will have to be put on hold for a rewrite, thus calling into question its reported release date of July 2025.
PerDeadline, Mendes’ role inMasters of the Universeconflicted withI Know What You Did Last Summer, causing the star to drop out of the project. She’d already committed to the Amazon MGM/Mattel film first, where she’ll take on the role of Teela, the Captain of Eternia’s Royal Guard responsible for protecting Nicholas Galitzine’s Prince Adam (He-Man).

Though it lingered in development hell for years, the reboot ofI Know What You Did Last Summerwas officially greenlit in February 2023, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) serving as director, and Leah McKendrick (Scrambled) penning the script.Mendes and Cline were announced to star in the projectalongside Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King, and while nothing has been officially confirmed, original stars Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt are also expected to appear in the reboot.

While major plot details for theI Know What You Did Last Summerreboot remain under wraps, it has been confirmed by Robinson thatit will incorporateI Still What You Did Last Summerinto its story,while thankfully ignoring the straight-to-DVD 2006 sequel,I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. In an interview given withColliderearlier this year, the director also revealed that social media will play a big factor in the reboot’s plot.
“At its core, I think itreallyreckons with some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?”

She wouldn’t reveal much more than that, but did comment that"I think if you’re an OG fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it."

As to how Mendes’ exit from the film will affect its schedule, we’ll have to wait to find out.
