The fifth episode, “Darkest Hour/Wake Thy Power” of Disney+‘sAgatha All Alongleft off on quite a cliffhanger. It revealed that the boy previously known as “Teen” was, in fact, Billy Maximoff. Known as Wiccan in the comics, he is the reincarnated son of Wanda Maximoff, otherwise known as Scarlet Witch, and Vision. Of course, Billy wasn’t completely sure of this himself. He woke up at 13 without any memory of who he was before, either as Billy Maximoff or as William Kaplan, the son of Jeff (Paul Adelstein) and Rebecca Kaplan (Maria Dizzia). But it was at that point that he learned he had magical powers, and in Episode 5, he used them on Agatha.

Wanda Maximoff, his mother, has a longer history in theMarvel Cinematic Universe, and therefore, there’s more evidence of her power. While she was introduced as an antagonist to the Avengers, she eventually joined them and showed she could wield her powers with the best of them. This was established inWandaVisionwhen she used her magic to create a hex that resurrected Vision, conjured the pregnancy that led to their twin sons, and controlled the whole town of Westview, New Jersey as well as all the people in it. But who’s more powerful: Wiccan or his mother, Wanda? Let’s explore.

What We Know About Wiccan

Agatha All Along

Episode 6 ofAgatha All Along, “Familiar by Thy Side,” provides a brief bit of lore on Billy Maximoff.Billy — and his brother Tommy — disappeared when Wanda lifted the hex in Westview three years ago. At the same time, thecar William Kaplan is traveling in crashes. William dies and Billy’s essence or spirit takes up residence in William Kaplan’s body. That’s all we really know about Billy from the series. While our focus is on the Marvel Cinematic Universe here, since Billy Maximoff is a new character in the MCU, we’ve turned to the comics for some backstory.

Billy is known as Billy Kaplan in the comics and goes by the superhero name Wiccan.Billy became a member of the Young Avengers and discovered that he and his fellow young Avenger Tommy Shepherd, also known as Speed, are the reincarnations of Wanda and Vision’s twins. Much like inWandaVision, a spell allows Wanda to become pregnant with the twins. But after a brief life with their parents, the twins were reabsorbed by the villain Mephisto because they were created from fragments of his essence. However, due to Wanda’s magic, they break free from Mephisto and are reincarnated into different families.

The stage is set for Billy to be a part of theYoung Avengers in the MCU, along with the previously introduced Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). And Billy might still find Tommy at the end of the Witches’ Road inAgatha All Along.

Wiccan vs. Wanda: Who Comes Out on Top?

If the question is who is more powerful in the comics — Wiccan or Wanda — the answer is probably Wiccan. Wiccan not only has access to his mother’s chaos magic and, therefore, has powers that are largely just like hers, but he also has expanded his powers beyond that — and as he’s only a young man, will continue to stretch them. In the comic,Doctor Strange and the Sorcerers Supreme, we learn that in the future,Wiccan will succeed Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supremeand, inYoung Avengers, Volume 2, #9, we learn thatWiccan will become a godlike being who’ll rewrite the rules of magic. While both of those things happen later in his life, not in his current incarnation, it’s still fair to say that, in the comics, Wiccan is more powerful.

Agatha All Along Creator Explains Why it Doesn’t Have a Lot of MCU Connections

Showrunner Jac Schaeffer explains why Agatha has minimal connections to the larger MCU.

From what we’ve seenin the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though, Wanda is more powerful than Billy, at least at this point in his story. Billy, it seems, has the raw talent to be a powerful witch… one day. Buthe can’t maintain his power now. Although he broke the spell that had Agatha locked in Wanda’s funhouse of magic and then magically confronts her — plus Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata) and Lilia (Patti LuPone) — in Episode 5, he can’t summon his powers again when he tries in Episode 6.Right now it seems he needs an emotional trigger to wield them. Plus, he has not yet become the fully-fledged superhero we know as Wiccan.

Wanda or Scarlet Witch, on the other hand, has no troublewielding her powersno matter what the circumstances. She not only put a hex on the entire town of Westview inWandaVision, inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, under the influence of the Darkhold, but she also managed to take out many people with her magic, including superheroes and fellow magic-users. Even Doctor Strange couldn’t stop her. Instead, she brought down a temple on herself that supposedly killed her (however, we didn’t see a body). This shows that, at this point, Wanda is much more powerful in the MCU than Wiccan, although what the future holds is anyone’s guess.StreamAgatha All Alongon Disney+.
