J.J. Abrams Reveals How He Came Up With ‘Duster’
In many ways,Dusteris influenced by the 70s crime films that came before it. However, the new series was derived from an image that was imprinted in the creative mind behindDuster. J. J. Abramsrevealedthat the idea for the Max show came from him imagining a man driving up to a phone in the middle of the desert and picking it up to retrieve his next mission. From there, the plot ofDusterwas born as a wide-ranging crime thriller that involves far more than one guy in a car.
“I had this image of a phone in the middle of the desert and a car driving up, and a guy getting on the phone to find out where he was meant to go next. It implied some kind of crazy intrigue, and I didn’t know what the answer was, but I knew it was compelling.”

Abrams collaborated with LaToya Morgan to fill out the details and the actual narrative, which started with finding out who the driver might be and how an FBI agent would get involved. The filmmaker wanted to tell a “crazy story,” and it seemsDusteris the ultimate manifestation of that initial idea.
“LaToya and I started talking about who this guy might be. I always knew there would be an FBI agent who showed up. But it wasn’t until we started talking about what her story is, that we started building this story towards something that felt twisty and turn-y and ultimately really satisfying.”
