The new trailer forJames Gunn’s take onSupermanwas just released this morning, and one of the highlights was undoubtedly The Man of Steel’s dog, Krypto. We saw how the pooch came blasting through the snow to help out his injured owner, dragging him by the cape to safety. However, while it might seem like he’s a good boy,Gunn says otherwise.
Speaking withDeadlinein celebration of the trailer forSuperman, Gunn calledthe relationship between David Corenswet’s titular character and Krypto a “complicated” one. That’s part of what makes the movie fun, though, as he also says it gives fans a chance to see a side of the DC superherowe’ve rarely seen portrayed in previous films.

“This movie at the end of the day is not about power. This movie is about a loose term of the word a human being and who he is as a person and virtually struggling in his day-to-day life, and we see a different aspect of him in the beginning.
“His relationship with Krypto is complicated. He’s not nearly the best dog. There’s a lot more to Krypto than you see in this trailer.”

‘Superman’ Trailer Reactions Reveal If James Gunn’s New DCU Will Soar
Have the naysayers been won over? Or is this another DC dud?
Anyone who owns a dog knows where Gunn is coming from when he talks about that “complicated” relationship, as canines can havea surly personality at timesthat’s hard to control. As to what that means forSuperman, your guess is as good as ours right now. Will Krypto pee all over the couch? Will he barf up his lunch on the carpet? Or perhaps we might see him take Clark Kent for a walk instead of the other way around. Either way, we’ll take all the Krypto we can get, because there’s a good chance that among all the drama, action, and explosions, the little Labrador retriever could end up stealing the show.

‘Superman’ Is About “Real People Having Real Lives”
One of the reasons Krytpo is highlighted in the trailer is because not only does Superman owning a dog showcase his humanity, but for Gunn, he believes it speaks to the overall theme of his movie, which is about “real people having real lives;“and nothing gets more real than taking care of a four-legged friend. How can you hate someone that loves dogs? It’s impossible.
“He lives in a world of superheroes. This is an alternative history world where superheroes exist but it’s also incredibly grounded. It’s about real people having real lives, there just happens to be metahumans there. Superman has friends who are other superheroes.”

As we saw in the trailer, some of those friendsinclude Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Michael Hoult, a.k.a. Mr. Terrific. All of them, coupled with Lois Lane and Krypto, will work to bring us what will hopefully be the best version ofSupermanwe’ve seen in years, but until the film hits theaters on August 16, 2025, the verdict is still out on that one.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
