James Gunnhas once again been using his Twitter account to quietly debunk theories about the upcoming slate of DCU movies, this time responding to a question about the possible inclusion of Clark Kent having a son in theupcomingSuperman: Legacy. While there are still very few details known about any of the movies coming in the initial “chapter” of the DCU’s rebirth, it seems that Gunn has been quick to dismiss the suggestions that Superman could be part of a family affair.
Gunn’s comments came in response to another comment from theHenry Cavill supporters camp, who still have not given up on the actor being reinstated as Superman. The post aimed at Gunn read, “There was no reason to change [Cavill] if your Superman is already going to have a child. What are you doing James? It’s lost.” Gunn’s simple reply read:
“I never said Clark is going to have a child.”
So, with another rumor falling the way of so many others, what exactly willSuperman: Legacyincluding as its main story thread? Again, other than a tease ofa younger iteration of the character coming to the DCU, and the description that he will be a “big galoot,” there is currently little to go on until the next wave of information is revealed.
Superman’s Latest Return Has Been in The Works Earlier Than Many Believed
While there is still a strong belief that the wave of changes to have hit the DCU, including the replacement of Henry Cavill as the Man of Steel, were all instigated by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Gunn has debunked these claims. Recently Gunn revealed that the reboot of the Superman franchise was not something that he instigated, but something thathe was hired to work onprior to his subsequent appointment as DC Studios’ co-CEO.
According to Gunn, he was “hired to writeSuperman: Legacyover six months ago,” which would make that movie one of the secret projects that he teased while promotingPeacemakerand his subsequent DC work around that time. This also mean that despite Cavill appearing inBlack Adam’spost-credits scene, there was never a place for him in the DCU’s immediate future as the new iteration of the character was already well underway.
However anyone feels about the handling of Cavill’s supposed return and “firing” from the DCU, it is clear that there is a firm path now being created for the franchise going forward. For better or worse, there is little that can be done to change either that has happened in the last several months, or indeed the last several years since Zack Snyder was forced to abandonJustice Leaguein 2016. The important thing from James Gunn’s perspective is clearly to make sure that from this point on, the DCU is the best version of the franchise it can be. Whether that is how it all works out is something we won’t find out for a couple of years.
