WithJohn Wick 5confirmed to be in the works, speculation has run rampant on whatthe sequel could be aboutafter the timely death of Keanu Reeves' titular character. And while we may have to wait a bit longer to learn the exact plot ofChapter 5, the director just teased that it will follow a “really different” story. A long-running theory that positions Wick attempting to escape the underworld could be happening after all, it seems.
During an interview with Empire, director Chad Stahelski revealed new details onJohn Wick 5, and how it won’t be a direct “continuation” of the previous storyline regarding the High Table. It seems Wick has moved on to a new chapter of his life (or death), one that many fans have speculated will see the assassin fight his way out of hell. Stahelski doesn’t confirm any special plot details, but it is safe to say thatChapter 5will be a subversive entry for the franchise. Stahelski stated the following:

“The saga of John Wick was pretty wrapped up. So the only way to do a5is to have a new story that involves John Wick. It’s not a continuation, with the High Table. John dealt with his grief. It will be really different, and everybody [will] see the trailer and go, ‘Holy fuck… I gotta see that.’”
‘John Wick’ Favorite’s Western Action Thriller Unleashes Bullet-Ridden Footage
“Choose a side…or get caught in the crossfire.”
Of course, any theories aboutJohn Wick 5being set in the underworld are just speculation. It would be quite the departure for the action franchise, even though Wick has survived arguably more fantastical circumstances. Whatever the case may be,Chapter 4left things openenough to make Wick’s return from apparent death not only a possible outcome, but a likely one. Until then, audiences will get to see Reeves back as Wick well beforeChapter 5hits theaters inBallerina, which stars Ana de Armas in the lead role. The upcoming spin-off is set before the events ofChapter 4, but could shed light on the future of the franchise.

Upcoming ‘John Wick’ Projects Could Dictate ‘Chapter 5’s Storyline
As of right now, there are at least threeJohn Wick-related projects in the works outside of the upcoming fifth installment. The aforementioned titles include a Donnie Yen-led spin-off,aJohn Wickprequel anime, and a live-action television series titledUnder the High Table. The latter of which could be a major stepping stone for whatChapter 5will be about, according to Chad Stahelski. Speaking with Empire, the director teased thatJohn Wick 5could be influenced by the direction the next two projects are headed.
“The John Wick TV show and the animation are big priorities. Our idea is to try some things and explore some threads and use those two properties to catapult us forward into the ideas forJohn 5.”

It’s unclear if Keanu Reeves will appear inUnder the High Table, but it is widely expected tofollow up on the events ofChapter 4. AlthoughJohn Wick 5will be moving on from the High Table storyline, it seems that the TV series could shed light on the future of the criminal organization. Stahelski is set to executive produce and will direct the pilot, while Robert Levine will be handling script duties.
