Was ‘Ballerina’ a Successful ‘John Wick’ Movie?
Success is a strange thing to measure in any movie franchise. The originalJohn Wickmovies did not deliver the kind of box office that Reeves’ supposed last outing as the assassin enjoyed in 2023. That film ended its theatrical run at $447 million, almost four times the amount taken byBallerina, making it seem like de Armas’ movie was nothing short of disappointing.
What was perhaps hardest to work out is exactly why the film did not draw more audiences into cinemas. De Armas has seen her profile rise dramatically in the last several years, starring in movies such asNo Time to Die, Knives Out, andGhosted. Additionally,Ballerinawas not only stylistically the same as the rest of theJohn Wicksaga, but even featured an appearance by the man himself.

However, the financial result does not seem to have made much difference to the future of the franchise, asJohn Wick 5is still in development. The new movie, which has to somehow negate the fact that Wick was believed to be dead at the end ofJohn Wick: Chapter 4, has been getting plenty of positive talk from director Chad Stahelski and Reeves, but what it will look like, and when we see it, are two questions that fans will not be getting answered for a little while yet.
