Kraven the Hunterhas been hyped byAaron Taylor-Johnsonas a very different movie to the previous Sony Spider-Man Universe offerings, something that has been hinted at with the film’s R-rating as opposed to the PG-13 rating of previous entries including theVenomfranchise,Morbius, andMadame Web. However, it seems that the film is telling the same old story when it comes to audience reactions to the film, and although it does not yet have an official Rotten Tomatoes score, social media has delivered a pretty damning snapshot of what can be expected when those numbers do come in.

Kraven the Hunteris released on December 13, and while some viewers have praisedthe film’s intense action sequencesand Taylor-Johnson’s portrayal of Kraven, there are a lot of negative reactions filtering through from the movie’s premiere on Tuesday. As@JuniorFettput it:

Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Kraven the Hunter

“I really wanted to love Kraven The Hunter, but the awful first act, bad CGI and even worst dialogue ruined it. The best things about the film are Aaron’s performance and the BLOODY action sequences but that wasn’t enough. These characters deserved better.”

This is not unique toKraven, as the same kind of comment has haunted the franchise sinceMorbius. Many people have wanted to like the movies that Sony has been putting out featuring some of Spider-Man’s rogue’s gallery of comic book villains, but the films have always had the same complaints – bad dialogue, bad set-ups, and inadequate CGI. Perhaps as@justmyopinion84suggested, the best way to enjoyKraven the Hunteris not to expect too much.

Kraven the Hunter Poster

“With low expectations [Kraven the Hunter] isn’t that bad. Kraven showing off his skills and abilities was entertaining. There are many conveniences, weak villains, and bad cgi, but still a decent time.”

‘Kraven the Hunter’ Tells a Different Story With the Same Problems

Kraven the Hunterexplores the origin story of Sergei Kravinoff, focusing on his complex relationship with his father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). The film follows Kraven’s transformation into a formidable hunter, motivated by vengeance and leaving a bloody path of destruction in his wake. The film also features Ariana DeBose as Calypso, Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov (the Chameleon), and Alessandro Nivola as Aleksei Sytsevich (the Rhino).

December’s New Marvel Release Already Looks to be in Trouble at the Box Office

‘Kraven the Hunter’s first box office projections are not a good sign for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Although the movie does attempt to throw in many nods to the legacy of the character, andthe violence and action sequencesseem to be as brutal as promised, the film can’t seem to break away from the hallmark weak scripting that has plagued the franchise from the start.

Naturally, the film does have some fans.@Seantajwas happy to heap praise on this SSU-closer, again leaning heavily on the performance of Taylor-Johnson and the action scenes, but also taking a moment to also appreciate the story.

“Kraven the Hunter is a knockout! Aaron Taylor-Johnson embodies Kraven with his physique, charisma, and raw savagery. The R-rating pays off big time. This film is bloody, raw, and brutal while offering a story that does this iconic villain justice.”

Kraven the Hunter

Kraven the Hunter is the fourth movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, set in the same Marvel continuity as Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius. Played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the titular Kraven goes on a solo adventure as an anti-hero, this time independent of his comic book counterpart’s crusade to hunt down Peter Parker.
