The fourthKung Fu Pandafilm’s directorMike Mitchellrecently shared his vision forKung Fu Panda 5. After eight years of hiatus since the third installment, the longest in the series’ history,Kung Fu Panda 4has rekindled the fans' passion for Po and his thrilling exploits.
In a recent interview withComicBook, director Mitchell expressed his unwavering commitment to scale up Kung Fu Panda’s narrative and action in future sequels. He remarked:
I think no matter what, we keep going bigger. Whether I’m working on it or not, I’m in the theater watching these things.
With its latest outing, the franchise has now soared past the $2 billion mark, asserting its dominance in the world of animation.Kung Fu Panda 4not only captured hearts but also captured amonumental spot in the box office, trailing only behindDune: Part TwoandGodzilla x Kong: The New Empirein this year’s earnings.
One of the franchise’s distinct charm isJack Black’s portrayal of Po, the Dragon Warrior, whose vibrant energy and charisma breathe life into the saga. Mitchell praised Black’s performance, suggesting that Po’s appeal could sustain the franchise for many more installments.
“If Jack Black is performing as Poe the Dragon Warrior, I just think that character could last forever. He’s so charming, he’s so action packed. Not to mention this world is so filled with characters.”
Beyond the main hero, Mitchell hinted at the rich set of characters within theKung Fu Pandauniverse, particularly the Furious Five, whose stories are ripe for exploration.
“We just took a little break from The Furious Five, which everyone can’t wait to see those guys and what they’re doing and what they’re up to. There’s so much story to tell and it never feels to me like it would be something intimate. It’s always got big action. It’s hard for me to imagine it’s just taking place in one room. I mean, we had so many ideas from this film that we just couldn’t fit in.”
The latest addition to the cast, Zhen, voiced by Awkwafina, introduces a refreshing twist to the narrative. Sean Sexton, the head of animation, sees significant potential for this new character, hinting at a future where Zhen could take center stage.
Mitchell Wanted the ‘Perfect Story’ for Kung Fu Panda 4
After taking the directorial role inKung Fu Panda 4, Mitchell was determined to present a narrative that is worthy of Po’s heroic status. In an interview, he explained that thefourth film should not only entertainbut also take the characters beyond their previous triumphs.

With the trailer for Kung Fu Panda 4 recently released and the Furious Five absent, fans are up in arms. Why are these characters so important?
“When I was producing the third film, we’re like, ‘Wow, we’re really wrapping up.’ And so, for this one, probably why it took so long to get to the big screen is we didn’t start on this until we are sure we had the right story. It’s all about finding that perfect story. We don’t want to just tell another one. It’s got to be something that evolves Po, and Po has got to learn something… he’s got to really advance to the next level.”
Mitchell’s creative process was deliberate and meticulous, choosing to begin production only after landing on what he considered the “perfect story.” So it may take a while until the nextKung Fu Pandafilm.
