During an interview withEmpireto promote his new action film,Love Hurts, Ke Huy Quan said he wants to play a bad guy in his next movie. “I would love to play a bad guy,” the beloved actor began.“Like a Bond villain. Or the kind of thing Hugh Grant does inHeretic.“In A24’s recent horror flick, the former romcom star,Hugh Grant, played a murderous and psychotic villainwho lured two Jehovah’s Witnesses into his house to toy with them. Playing a villain would be massively against-type for Ke Huy Quan, who contemporary audiences know best as thetrue hero ofEEAAO, the pacifistic Waymond Wang.

While some actors want to play villains to dig into the darker psyches of the characters, and understand what made them so twisted, Huy Quan was upfront about his desire to play a baddie. The actor wants to play the most mustache-twiddling, puppy-kicking villain of all the mustache-twiddling, puppy-kicking villains around. He continued:

“I want to go out of my comfort zone and just play this diabolical, really bad guy. That would be a lot of fun.”

Ke Huy Quan Doesn’t Want to Be an “Action Star”

Despite that, Ke Huy Quan doesn’t want to be nestled into the label of an “action star.” During the interview, he said:

“I don’t want to be perceived as an action star, I hope I’m perceived as an actor who does action well.” Huy Quan continued, “So I’m going to take it one step at a time. The best part about being an actor is, you get to play a variety of different characters. I love [Loki‘s] Ouroboros because he’s so different than [EEAAO‘s] Waymond, and Waymond is so different than [Love Hurts‘] Marvin Gable.”

As well asLove Hurts, which releases in theaters on February 7, Ke Huy Quan also has another action movie in the pipeline.
