Nothing can stop it!
Universal Pictures' Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is headlined by musicaldigital-shortssuperstarsAndy Samberg,Akiva SchafferandJorma Taccone. They are the group collectively known asThe Lonely Island! The comedy goes behind the scenes as singer/rapperConner4Real(Andy Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leaving his fans, sycophants and rivals all wondering what to do when he’s no longer the dopest star of all.
The latest comedy from blockbuster producer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Superbad, Knocked Up) co-starsSarah Silverman,Tim Meadowsand Maya Rudolph and many of the biggest names in comedy and music in cameo performances. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone and written by TheLonely Islandtrio. The comedy is also produced by Rodney Rothman (producer of Get Him to the Greek, Forgetting Sarah Marshall; co-writer of 22 Jump Street), as well as Samberg, Schaffer and Taccone.
While Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is being referred to as the firstLonely Islandmovie, that’s not necessarily true. The trio also co-wrote, co-directed, co-produced and starred in the 2007 comedyHot Rod, which also hadAndy Sambergin the lead. The film debuted during the group’s SNL heyday. That movie centered Rod Kimball, a small town stuntman who is rather accident-prone. Poor Rod cannot get any respect from his stepfather, Frank, who beats him up in weekly sparring matches. When Frank falls ill, Rod devises his most outrageous stunt yet to raise money for Frank’s operation, and then Rod will kick Frank’s butt. The movie didn’t necessarily set the world on fire, earning only $13.9 million domestically, with a worldwide total of $14.3 million. The film has since gone onto become a bonafide cult favorite.
Promoted as aLonely Islandmovie,Popstar: Never Stop Never Stoppingshould fare better thanHot Rodat the box office. Though, it faces some serious summer competition on June 3. The comedy will be going up against the sequelTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadowsand the romantic comedyMe Before YoustarringEmilia ClarkeandSam Claflin. That doesn’t seem to bother these guys, though. As they promise to never stop never stopping.
