James Bondis heading into a new era withAmazon MGM Studios taking over creative control of the 60-year-old franchise, and following the departure of Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, another veteran of the industry has shared their views on the change in leadership after making their own decision to step away from the franchise. Long-term casting director Debbie McWilliams had already made her decision to retire from the world of Bond before the recent bombshell announcement, but as perScreen Daily, was more than happy to share her own unenthusiastic view on the future of the saga.

McWilliams’ candid outlook was mostly generated on the back ofJeff Bezos’ social media post on X, which asked fans who they would cast as the new James Bond. Of course, no one is suggesting that the role will be cast by the public – we know how those things work out – but McWilliams still referenced it in a brutal statement. She said:

‘James Bond’: How the Franchise Could Evolve in a Completely Different Direction

With Amazon MGM Studios acquiring complete ownership of the ‘James Bond’ franchise, things could either take a bleak or bright turn.

Naturally, the world ofJames Bondwill change as a result of Amazon taking the reins, but exactly what that looks like is uncertain, and according to recent comments from Amazon’s CEO, it will be some time before we see the result of the change in command.

Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Amazon Wants to Get ‘James Bond’ Right

While the kind of seismic change that such a shake-up brings is always going to get an explosive reaction from fans, the truth about what theJames Bondfranchise will look like in the future is something we are not going to know until plans are officially worked out and announced. Many fans are bracing themselves for endless watered-down spinoffs, but Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy recently spoke about the company’s acquisition of the franchise, and suggested that their main goal is to get things right. He said recently:

“We don’t have a plan yet on what the next theme is going to be. We haven’t – nobody’s written the story yet. But we will take great care. It’s an amazing franchise that we care a lot about and that we expect to develop over a long period of time. I don’t believe that AI is going to write a Bond movie any time soon.”

Jassy followed up by adding that Amazon execs are “incredibly honored to have the ability to help shepherd the Bond franchise for the next generation. And we have amazing filmmakers that we have hired over time at MGM Amazon Studios.”

Of course, there are very few long-term Bond fans that believe a word of this right now. Full judgment on what the changes mean for James Bond’s future will have to wait, but we can be sure that there will be plenty of opinions when the first casting news and then a new movie arrives.
