Prime Video has just recently provided a first look at their next big action series, with new images teasing the intrigue and action that awaits viewers in this new show. TitledButterfly, the Prime Video series is an adaptation of the BOOM! comic of the same name, written by Arash Amel.Daniel Dae Kim, known for series likeAvatar: The Last Airbender, Lost, andHawaii Five-O, will star in and executive produce the series. Alongside this first look at the series came news of the episode count and release date, withButterflyset for a summer release.
In a press release from the streaming platform, it was announced thatButterflywould premiere on Prime Video in its entirety on August 12, 2025. The series will consist of six episodes, and Kim will be joined by series regulars Reina Hardesty (The Secret Art of Human Flight), Piper Perabo (Yellowstone, Billions), and Louis Landau (Rivals). In a statement from Kim, the actor and producer expressed his gratitude for bringing a show to life that serves as an intersection of two cultures, while also having passionate producing partners from various studios, saying:

“Butterflyis the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply. I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, BOOM! ‘Butterfly’ Is An International Espionage Show To Keep An Eye On
Alongside Daniel Dae Kim as executive producer,Butterflywill have Ken Woodruff as its showrunner and co-creator alongside Steph Cha. Woodruff has previously worked on series likeThe MentalistandGotham, providingButterflywith a wealth of experienced creatives in every facet of production. Stephen Christy and Ross Richie of Boom! Studios will also be serving as executive producers on the series as well. What makes this more exciting is the international espionage premise at the center ofButterfly.
The story ofButterflywill center on the character David Jung (Kim), a former intelligence operative who is now living in South Korea. David’s complicated past comes back to haunt him when an assassin named Rebecca (Reina Hardesty) is sent by an organization called Caddis to eliminate him. The first two episodes of the series are directed by Kitao Sakurai, who has directed episodes in series likeTwisted Metal, Dave, andThe Eric Andre Show.

The development ofButterflyis a sign that Prime Video isn’t slowing down its global slate of film and television projects. This isn’t the only international series being released by the platform this year, either—the German television seriesMaxton Hallwill also release its second season towards the end of this year, in November. With all six episodes dropping on its August 13 release date,Butterflycould serve as a good binge-watch in a summer season filled with several exciting movies and television projects also being released.
