News of a sequel almost 40 years in the making can do wonders for a movie’s success on streaming. Hot on the heels of the announcement thatSpaceballs 2is finally heading into production, the original 1987Mel BrooksStar Warsspoof is heading where it has never been before – to the top end of the HBO streaming chart.
Spaceballslanded on Max several days ago, perfectly in conjunction with the unexpected reveal that the cult classic comedy will not only be getting a sequel, but Brooks will be back to star in the film as well as the long-retiredRick Moranis, who will reportedly reprise his role as Dark Helmet. Now, after being in the Top 10 for almost a week, the movie has jumped to #2 and is sitting behind the mighty A Minecraft Movie, no doubt spurred on by the curiosity of those who have never seen the film before, and those who want to remind themselves of one of Brooks’ many parody movies that sitsalongside the likes ofBlazing SaddlesandYoung Frankensteinas one of his best-known releases. The synopsis for the movie reads:
“When the nefarious Dark Helmet hatches a plan to snatch Princess Vespa and steal her planet’s air, space-bum-for-hire Lone Starr and his clueless sidekick fly to the rescue. Along the way, they meet Yogurt, who puts Lone Starr wise to the power of The Schwartz. Can he master it in time to save the day?”
Mel Brooks Had Josh Gad Sweating Through a Frantic ‘Star Wars’ Refresher
The famed ‘Spaceballs’ director and comedian needed a bit of help understanding just where that galaxy far, far away has gone today.
Just like many of Brooks’ movies, there is no shortage of big names in the cast, including, alongside the director and Moranis, Bill Pullman, John Hurt, John Candy, George Wyner, Joan Rivers, Ed Gale, Dom DeLuise and many more. While critics were divided over the film, audiences knowing what to expect from Brooks were quick to praise the film’s scattergun approach to the script, which delivers joke after joke, and recently several review have labeled Spaceballs “the best sci-fi comedy spoof of all-time.”
‘Spaceballs 2’ Is Bringing the Schwartz Back in 2027
Although it seemed that the time for aSpaceballssequel to become a reality had long since passed, it looks like Brooks very much believes that it is never too late to jump back into one of his past successes. After following upThe History of the World Part 1with a TV miniseries in 2023, Brooks and Frozen star Josh Gad have reportedly been throwing around aSpaceballssequel for several years, and now fans will finally see the new movie arrive in 2027.
Currently, there is very little known about the plot of the movie, which became apparent in Amazon MGM Studios’ press release, which teased, “While the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as ‘A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two’ but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film.” Clear as crystal.
What we do know is that 99-year-old Brooks is reprising his role as Yogurt – his parody character based onStar Wars’Yoda – Moranis is coming out of retirement to play Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman will be returning as Lone Star. Joining the cast will be Gad, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman. This time around, director duties fall to Josh Greenbaum and the movie has been written by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.
