With the anticipation growing by the day forStar Wars: The Force Awakens, which hits theaters in December, the buzz surrounding this highly-anticipated space adventure may have planted the seeds for a sequel to everyone’s favoriteStar Warsparody,Mel Brooks' 1987 classicSpaceballs. The 88-year-old filmmaker was recently a guest on Adam Carolla’s podcastTake a Knee, where he teased possible plans forSpaceballs 2, which was actually mentioned in the movieSpaceballsitself. Here’s what he had to say below.
“Maybe I could do another musical, maybe I could do another movie. I was thinking aboutSpaceballsthe other day. InSpaceballs, in the movie,Bill Pullmansays to me, Yogurt, just plain Yogurt, he says ‘Do you think we’ll ever meet again?’ and I say ‘Well, I don’t know… maybe inSpaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.’ And I’m thinking now, if I did a movie that came out right afterStar Warscomes out - maybe a couple of months later - I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back… but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeingSpaceballs 2, would… I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still haveRick Moranisif he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.”

Naturally, the filmmaker wouldn’t divulge any specific plot details, but the sequel sadly wouldn’t includeJohn Candy(Barf) orJoan Rivers(Dot Matrix), since they have both passed away. But, if the filmmaker could getBill Pullman(Lone Star), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) andRick Moranis(Dark Helmet) back, there could be plenty of story opportunities to explore.
Mel Brookshasn’t directed a movie since 1995’s Dracula: Dead And Loving It, but he recently lent his voice toMr. Peabody and Shermanas Albert Einstein, and he also voices Vlad, the father ofAdam Sandler’s Dracula in the animated sequelHotel Transylvania 2, set for release this September. It’s worth noting that the 30th anniversary ofSpaceballsis coming in just two short years, which could be perfect timing for the sequel, should it come together.
