In a special episode ofThe Simpsonsthat debuted on Feb. 12 and is available only on Disney+,C. Montgomery Burnshas been given a new origin story that explains why he turned evil. Titled “The Past and the Furious,” Lisa travels back in time to 1923 following Springfield losing all of its plants and to save the Springfield Mini Moose, which went extinct in 1925.
In this alternate reality episode,Lisa falls into depression following the end of plants due to Mr. Burns' machinations. Homer and Marge take Lisa in for help and the therapist suggests special EDMR psychotherapy to help her deal with the trauma. These devices cause Lisa to have dreams where she travels back to the Jazz Age in 1923 and becomes her Great Grandmother, Edith. Together with a young Monty Burns (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt),they must save the Springfield Mini Moose, which in turn will save the future. Unfortunately, Lisa, as Edith, plays a big part in why young Monty becomes the evil corporate overlord Mr. Burns in the future.

The show is known for playing around with characters and storylines, yet everything and everyone needs to return to the normal state of the series. That means they can have a fun, time-traveling episode featuring a young Mr. Burns and Lisa, but they both must still be the same characters at the end of the episode as they were at the beginning. This origin story for Mr. Burns in this special episodedoesn’t appearto be canon, but Lisa’s dream and subsequent adventure is a great way to freshen up the series.
Audiences were already treated to a not-so-real"The Simpsons Series Finale" episode last fall with the season premiere. The show featured guest starsConan O’Brien (a former writer and producer on the show), Tom Hanks, Danny DeVito (returning as Homer’s half brother, Herb), Seth Rogen, and John Cena.
