As Elia’s murky past and financial misdeeds begin to reveal a dark motivation behind his attraction to the very wealthy Gabriella, the romantic housing of their interactions continues to beguile the viewers. Who could not fall in love in such a paradise? The series has the gloss and beauty of a typical romance tale. This coaxes the viewers to accept the frame of a love story. In spite of his increasingly obvious flaws, the viewer is encouraged to brush past their reservations to embrace Elia’s illicit character. Just as it frustratingly does to the besotted Gabriella.
Deceitful Love Features a Tense-Filled Romance
Deceitful Loveis a conundrum. It is a romance with characters who will themselves to love to their own detriment, which isn’t deceitful at all.The pacing throughout the seriesis commendable. In the nature of melodramas, each episode is full of suspense and mystery, as viewers can never be quite sure who they — and Gabriella — should trust. Each character has their fair share of secrets, and their weight fills the series with tension throughout. As Gabriella’s emotionally absent children become aware of their mother’s romantic entanglement, their swift switch to protectors makes them antagonistic. This is a surprising, though well played, distinction. It builds on the distance in the relationship between Gabriella and her children from the series’ first moments and carries it through to the series’ end.
For the two main leads, the chemistry between Gabriella and Elia is strong. Elia is a compelling and striking figure, while Gabriella is profoundly likable. On the surface, it is very easy to root for their characters. And though the wavering dynamic of their relationship becomes nauseatingly rocky over the first two episodes, the heavy waves of drama will keep viewers gripped. The title of the series is perhaps misnamed, as it is clear to both Gabriella and viewers that Elia is a discreditable figure.The guilt in this ‘guilty pleasure’ series lies in the audience continuing to root for Gabriella’s happiness when what she desires is clearly dysfunctional. Elia is no con man. However, Gabriella’s contentment with what she has chosen at the finale of the series is a marked contrast from the character’s isolated beginning.

While some viewers found the show addictive and praised the series for having an assertive female lead, many others were put off by Gabriella’s poor decision-making and condemned the series’ portrayal of older women.
