TheGolden Globes 2020 nominationshave been revealed and Netflix bested the competition in a big way. Over the last handful of years, Netflix made the transition from a relatively humble streaming service to massive Hollywood player. Not that anyone is questioning their dominance at this point, but with a total of 34 nominations at one of the year’s biggest awards shows for its various original movies and TV shows, that dominance has been asserted rather impressively.
On the movie side,The Irishman,Marriage Story,The Two PopesandDolemite is My NamehelpedNetflixearn 17 total nominations. That is better than double what Sony Pictures managed, and they were in second place. In the Best Picture, Drama category, Netflix holds three of the five spots, withThe Irishman,Marriage StoryandThe Two Popsall garnering nominations alongsideJokerand1917.Dolemite is My Namewas nominated in the Musical or Comedy category and is up againstRocketman,Jojo Rabbit,Knives OutandOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Director Noah Baumbach’sMarriage Storyled the pack with six nominations. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver were both nominated for their performances. Laura Dern also scored a nomination in the supporting role category for her work in the movie. Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins were both nominated as well forThe Two Popes. Eddie Murphy scored a nomination for his performance as Rudy Ray More inDolemite Is My Name.
Martin Scorsese’s expensive and ambitious gangster epicThe Irishmanpaid off with several key nominations. Aside from Best Picture, the movie also earned Scorsese a nomination in the directing category, with both Joe Pesci and Al Pacino landing supporting role nominations. Lastly, the movie earned a Steve Zaillian a nomination for his screenplay. Netflix also has two other nominations in that category, withThe Two PopesandMarriage Storygoing againstParasiteandOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.
The Crown,The Kominsky MethodandThe Politicianwere nominated for topGolden Globeshonors on the TV side.Unbelievable,The Spy,Dead to Me,Russian DollandLiving With Yourselfwere all nominated in other various categories. Netflix is competing with the likes of HBO and Amazon, amongst others, in the various TV categories. HBO, for years, thanks to shows likeGame of Thronesand, in years past,The Sopranos, was seen as the cream of the crop on the small screen. The tide certainly appears to be shifting.
Last year, Netflix earned 16 total nominations, so the fact that they’ve more than doubled that number this year is telling. This is also important because the Golden Globes can often be a predictor of what’s to come at the Academy Awards. Does this mean Netflix will similarly dominate at the Oscars? Could this be the year they finally take home the Best Picture prize? They got close last year withRoma. With no clear frontrunner at this point, it certainly seems plausible. The 77th annual Golden Globes telecastis set for January 5 on NBC, with Ricky Gervais hosting.
